There was a news story here this week about a woman in Corpus Christi, Tx who was hoarding 230 Pomeranian dogs! They brought 20 of them to the humane society in San Antonio and they were put up for adoption this week end. Now I've been known as the crazy cat lady because at one time I had 21 cats in my house. But at the time, I was showing cats and most were taken to shows once or twice a year. (I went to shows every month or so but rotated the cats). But my vet knew I took good care of them and he would have been the first to turn me in if I hadn't taken care of them. Now I'm down to 5, and since I'm 20 years older than back then, 5 is a good number for me to take care of. What makes people take in over 100 animals into their homes? I know I had a lot but I could afford to take care of them and my house was still pretty clean most of the time. But over 100? I just cannot fathom someone thinking they can take care of that many on their own, esp. since it seems it is older people who are doing it.
Hmmmmmmmmmm...I guess I better watch out. In another 10 years or so, I may become a hoarder! Hopefully I am reasonable enough and will be reasonable enough to know I could not handle all those animals on my own.

you have to be careful about the pet population in your home...
where I live, most of the cities, (suburbs etc) have ordinances that say you can have 2 licensed pets, dogs or cats, and cats are required to be licensed, even when indoor pets only...

I was in a woman's apt once who had about 20 cats, I had to run out the door and throw up, the wholee place just reeked of cat piss. Funny thing was, she couldn't smell it. But with her door open, I could smell it from the parking lot.
I don't think that it's fair to the animals to have that many, specially closed up in a little apt.

who was hoarding 230 Pomeranian dogs! the food bill would be outragious and clean up would be a full time job..
unless she was "in the business" and not hoarding...
anyone know how much a Pom goes for these days in a pet store?
a shining example of todays reporting (at it's finest... ) lets not call it a "seizure of assets from a ( legal??) breeder."....but instead we will call it hoarding.. that has a much nicer ring to it...)
230 animals.. X ??400 dollars?? = $92,000.00

This is just ridiculous...nobody could care well for that many animals.
They need food, water, grooming, playtime, affection and love. One person couldn't do that alone.

From the news article, there were more than Pomeranians in the house, but conditions were not described as horrible or deadly, as is often the case in these situations. It was stated there wasn't enough room for so many animals, and of course there were issues with excrement, but that would be expected.
Sounds like she simply got in way over her head.
Another reason to ban backyard breeders and quit the incessant breeding of pets, period; IMNSHO. For it is always the animals who suffer the effects of human egos.

I confess that I am getting lazy in my "old coot" years...( Di... ) and am too feeble to look it up myself..
..but questions come to mind,,,
how big was the house? were there kennels? why did they only take 20 of them? were the ones taken "fixed" before allowing them to be adopted? ??

They removed all the animals from the house. The articles didn't say how big a house, though, nor did it say if there were cages used, etc.

GH all the animals were removed but were sent to different humane societies and kennels, etc all over the state. San Antonio got 20 of the dogs.
I just feel bad that with some of these people, the love of the animals is all the love they have. They have no one to check in on them and get hold of this before it becomes a problem. At least right now, I realize I can't care for tons of animals anymore.

Need more people who can check up on these types of people ,,,,,,Puppy mills are as bad if not worse......they spend there entire life in a cage no visit to a vet would take the profit away......
Some people with many dogs,,,,,do infact take care of them,,,,,,not all backyard breeders are bad...some are better then the kennels. Who have a state licence. Not enuff people to check up on the kennels. at least out here in My state.
The problem as I see it here in my city is the people who buy the christmas puppy,,,never gets spayed or nutered...and runs loose on the street then is pregos and then the same thing happens to those puppys ,,,,,if people would stop taking the free puppys.Or turn them in and have enuff state people to go see what kind of life that dog had......And fine them ,might stop the madness.
Can't buy from pet stores, you would be helping the puppy brokers and puppy mills,,,so how does one go about buying a puppy???
if not from small kennels and small breeders?

It's some sort of obsessive compulsive behavior I think. OCD of sorts? Just not clearly defined by the psyche community yet.
But it is to fill a gap in someone's life. Doubtless relates to hoarders of other kinds in some ways. but for slightly different subconscious motivations.
However if it were over 200 of anything, the only thing that might work really well would be ..
TARANTULAS!!
Man, that would be so cool!! Doncha think?

That reminds me of a Super Bowl commercial several years ago and that few people apparently saw. I loved it. Can't remember what the product was but they had cowboys and cats and were comparing the product to herding cats. Which any cat person knows will be nearly impossible!

There are good breeders out there that only have puppies or kittens once a year. Their dogs are house pets and taken good care of.
Me? I am seriously thinking of getting a hold of a animal rescue here where I live and have a look. I want a cat. I want one that is older too.

Yes katt I agree,,,but its up to the person looking for the animal to make sure ,,,its a good kennel or breeder...... I have seen a few ,,that.... oh whew,,,,,,,was in sad shape,,,,,and they say the animals are part of there family.
All mine live in the house with me ......yes I have breed them and have had puppys .....but the most important thing is spending time with them all and the puppys...my puppys are friendly not afraid of much .love people and other dogs. All see the vet when needed.and sometimes when not needed.I want to be sure my Pets are ok.....first and formost.
Some people say ,,,oh how could you breed your pet....well how many children do they have ???? if one does it right ,,,it is safe. And we need to keep the breeds going ,alive with new stock..I can't fix those who don't know any better then to let there dogs run frree and breed.....all i can do is offer to take any and all of my puppys back if theres a need to and replace them in a good loving home.
