I have gone "under" several times. I had no problems at all. Of course some people are different. We have several nurses on here, hopefully one of them will jump in here and give you better info.

It really depends on the individual and most everyone has no problem but there are some who do have problems. Would suggest you discuss this with your doctor if you really want to know the procedure.

Anesthesiologists really watch nowdays.
I have asthma, and have been "put out" a dozen times.
If you know you have a pre-existing condition, please tell them.
I didn't suffer any long term results.....but that's JUST me.

Been there done that not fun but it is necessary. Personally I just depend on the Lord to see me through but if He should decide that it is time to leave that is not a big deal either. I know, despite my shortcomings, that Jesus will take me to a better place after this life and all of my problems will be repaired at that time. Nothing to be afraid of when facing the troubles of this world then. Hope you find some peace about it. I find mine in Jesus Christ.

Hey Moonwalk...
I'm an Operating room nurse...work with patient undergoing general anesthesia every day. I, myself, have had numerous surgical procedure with a general...it's not like the movies...it has become much safer than it was in years past. The drugs have been perfected...Anesthesiologist have better training...we have instruments that can read your brainwaves (BIS monitor) while you are sleeping to make sure you are at the appropriate level of unconciousness...

Depending on the procedure, there may be options available to you that do not include general anesthesia...

Do you have specific fears that you would like to address? I would be very happy to email back to you with answers in private if you prefer...feel free to pick my brain...this is what I do for a living!!!

Maybe it would help if you knew about Brenda. She is Native-American and for some reason there arent any anesthesia's that work on her effectively. After gas is used she told me that when they ask you to count back from 100 she goes all the way to zero. They keep increasing the dose plus an IV to support the higher dose but the doctor told her that she woke up within 5 minutes.

Exactly how was this supposed to help her? FYI...I have worked in the OR for 15 yrs and have yet to have a patient count backward from 100! That practice went out with chloraform!!!

Cathy.

I am an OR nurse too, and former PACU nurse among other things. You said what I was going to, so I won't repeat them.

I'm sorry Jankia.. I misunderstood...

Moonwalk.. some folks are a bit sick on their stomach when they wake up.. rest assured, they will give you some IV med that will take care of the problem right away if you need it.. and don't be afraid to ask for pain meds if you need them.. they want you nice and comfy while you are in the recovery room.. some of the best nurses you will meet are in PACU

Hi Band!!!

Jankia..I've seen many things...I've seen people resistant to lots of drugs, but not one that we couldn't anesthetize...Some drugs work better on some people, others on others...if one knows of a familial trait such as you described, the anesthesiologist will want to be made aware. There are people that have negative experiences with drugs as well...that is also something to make your anesthetist aware of...but, these occassions are few and far between and should not be of great concern to the general public.

Thank you for your kind replies.

It is scary for me the situation, but I wish to not have this but i do not have another option.
I hope until I will have it to feel more comfortable with the situation.

The doctor told to me at the end of the day I will go home.

You'll do fine, Moon!!! Day surgey is great...get it done, get out...go home and rest in your own home/your own bed!!! Don't forget to get your pain meds (if you doc thinks you'll need them) filled beforehand if you can...that way, you'll be all set when you get home!!! Remember to drink lots of water and get lots of rest before and after the procedure!!!

I felt the same way my first time, Moonwalk, but now that I've been put under a few times, while I will always remain a bit nervous, I'm not really scared.

What they did with me each time is to put in an IV in pre-op, and first give something to help me relax. Then, as I was being wheeled into the OR, they hit a button and I was out cold without even realizing it was going to happen. One time, while joking around with my silly foot/ankle surgeon, I swear they hit the button while I was in mid-sentence!

The anesthesiologists are doctors and will talk to you a lot before anything is done. Every one I've had the pleasure to work with has been just that...a pleasure and have gladly explained anything I wanted to better understand about the procedure, the drugs, etc.

Afterwards, the post-op staff will make sure you're awake and feel ok before they let you go. However long it takes, they'll be right there for and with you.

My honest opinion is that if you don't find afterwards you can say you felt very safe, protected and cared for, then you need to find another doctor and hospital if you ever need serious surgery again. I've experienced three different hospitals' surgical groups and while I had issues afterwards with one surgeon, that had nothing to do with that hospital's support staff or their care of me.

You'll be ok!!!
