I consider myself a fairly intelligent person. Well informed. Educated. And yet, I have to admit, much like football, I could care less if the political forums dropped off the face of MD. Am I alone in this? What does it take to become interested?

If you're not interested, you're not interested. You don't need to make yourself interested.

I so admire you, Lip. You can converse with the best of them. And I can. And now and again, I do....but I'm not in your league by a long stretch. Tell me what makes you love politics. Tell me what you love about them.

I don't know.
My parents made me watch presidential debates when I was very little in 1992 and I just hooked onto it, I guess. I used to lead my friends in discussions of the 1996 election in I think....3rd grade. It's just something that I've been exposed to my whole life...my family forced my sister and I to talk politics at the table, etc....
If you want to look into politics, look at websites like RealClearPolitics and Politico.com, or listen to Public Radio.

Well, like any thread here, just don't go to them...obviously it attracts a lot of attention, and yes, fights.
I got involved in politics when I decided to be an attorney. Have to know what affects YOU, your family, home, taxes, healthcare. It should be important to everybody.....but you are not alone in the lack of interest.

The thing that I notice over here about American politics is that the election campaigns seem to go on and on and on..by the time they chose a Democrat and then a Republican ..and then the Presidential vote.....no wonder a lot of people will be switched off to it all.

Yep....it's mostly the calls and the door knockers that ticked me off this year. There are several things that should be changed, but to go indepth would put it in the political thread

Politics Bore Me as well especially here in Italy where all our politicians are old, tedious and liars .....always the same faces from years and years, lustres and centuries
It's interesting to understand how your politics works. Everyday I see Obama, Clinton, McCain......go round all the 50 States.....with their campaign.....and then do people vote ?

I got an automated message from the Obama campaign on primary day, asking for my vote. How many people wait until primary day to form an opinion? And I stay out of the political forums for the most part, but sometimes, there are people in there I wouldn't mind getting to know better. Just not there.

How many people wait until primary day to form an opinion? I didn't wait until primary day to form an opinion, but I didn't know until I was in the booth who my vote was going for. It was a very hard five minutes that I was in there...LOL. And I'm not telling.

Politics don't bore me, but discussing them with people who have absolutely nothing to say does.
Pam, I suggest sending them an e-mail. I'd suggest doing that to anyone you want to get to know.

^^ Or start a thread over there on something you've wondered about. Learning is fun! Or start a current event thread....several of those people in politics discuss there..

If people who participate in the political forums are balanced and willing to listen to opinions that don't jive with theirs.. they are a good thing.. but when someone out of frustration resorts to name calling and unfounded observations.. is when most people start to .....
I must admit that I spend quite a bit of time there.. but my main reason is that I learn things over and above what the media spends on most topics these days..
I would miss them if they were gone..
case in point.. the tiger thread .. I learned that the zoo was run poorly.. and that I am now aware that in order to protect these animals.. the people in charge must start walking the walk as well as talk the talk...

Only another nine months of the presidentials to go, Pam...
This year the coverage is far more intensive in Europe, but then again the Democratic race is a hell of a lot more interesting this time round.
That's before we even get to the finale. But it'll pass faster than you think...

Ah...good example, the siberian tiger thread. How long I could reasonably see that thread lasting and how long it's lasting in reality... In politics, facts are never just facts.
