Have any of you researched your ancestors? What site did you use....? What was the cost...? Did you use a site you were not happy with?
Not wanting to bash any site here, perhaps it would be best to ask what site worked best for you?
I got an email from one today, it has a 2 different options...... ex. gold or regular. ect..
But what I found strange was they want to charge by the month...... How long do they think this will take? I was thinking of only going back a few generations. Any help would be appreciated.

I have traced my family back 42 generations and almost 2000 ancestors. It's fun.
A free site that I used to get started is Rootsweb.com......all you need is a GG Grandparents name and approximate birth year or state and go from there. The biggest help is when you find that a someone else has already done work on your family. I have found 5 distant cousins that I never knew existed.

familysearch.org is the Mormon site.
Also try censusfinder.com to look up free census records if you know the state and county or town of relatives.

Oh, Blu..........you just had to ask, didn't you?!?!?!? Genealogy is one of my biggest passions!!!!
I'm guessing you probably heard from Ancestry.com It's a good site, but personally, I'd wait before paying to join any site. Get as much info as possibe through the multitude of resources available at no cost before spending any money.
Two other good sites along with Rootsweb.com and FamilySearch.org to start with are genforum.com and usgenweb.org. There's a blue zillion places to check out!! The best place to start is get as much information as possible from parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc.
Be careful....genealogy can become quite addictive!!!!!!!!! I would suggest you document all your tidbits of information, i.e., the dates and names of individuals or places you got said data. You may find conflicting info and it is very helpful to be able to determine what you got where!!!
I'm a big stickler on "sourcing" and verifying my data. I have found others that have been tracing the same branches as myself, and I take their research into consideration, but I have found there are some researchers that do not verify their "findings". This can lead to errors in dates and parentage! Not a good thing if you are truly wanting to trace your ancestors!
Geez, I could go on all night!!! I'll e-mail you!!
HAPPY HUNTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I too am a genealogy buff. I have been working my family tree for 6 years now. I thought I could do it in a few months but 8 large note books later here I am. Traced my family back to 1610 in Wuerttenberg Germany. Found 1 Revolutionary War soldier and 1 War of 1812 soldier. Each one I was able to get new headstones for them through the V.A. because theirs were missing in action. I have had Ancestry.com now for all 6 years. Every month they add something new and exciting. If you don't want to pay for it use your local library. They usually have an account for their patrons that you can access. Also try Heritage Quest. You can go online through your local library and access it with your library card number. They have census records too. The Mormon site is good but I don't trust it too much because there are always inconsistancies. For when you're ready for obituaries try RAOGK (Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness) website, there is always someone in there that can help you. Ancestry has forum boards which people in there are always glad to help with obituaries and the likes. Do not dismiss findagrave.com either. I have found many family member in there that were hard to locate anywhere else. People use the site as an oppurtunity to get exercise and they take pics of headstone from their local cemeteries and post them on the site. Sometimes with obits like I do. Social security records tell alot. Ancetry charges but the Mormon website doesn't. Check historical societies in the counties your're searching too. Sometimes they have histor books with biographical info of local families. Most historical socities have websites. Rootsweb has websites for all counties. I hope some of this will help and good luck.

And sometimes just goofing around on the web works too. I found a family tree starting at 1617 and ending with my great grandfather.
