Who/Whom was online dating for? I am not bringing up this question in attempts of taking away from this site, or any other for that matter, but; “can that question be answered?”
How many friends so you make online that you can call on at various hours; just to talk?
At what point in an online made relationship does someone become “special”?

Question #1 I can only assume that online dating was originally introduced so that two people could meet who normally wouldn't have a chance to meet otherwise. For instance, such as myself, don't visit bars frequently. I also think it worked as a starting point for people who were new to the area they lived in and the media of internet provided a way to meet many people. It is also a place for sick people to devise ugly ways to have fun.... To do their deeds without anyone knowing who they really are! Also one could assume that people who are a bit shy, can take their time in getting to know someone...
Question #2 I have personally made quite a few friends that after having met in person, we talk on the phone on a regular basis. I could call at any given time, and vice versa, and they would be there for me....and have been, as I would for them! These are real people who I have come to love dearly and are both men and women.
Question #3 I don't really think there is a definite answer for that one... It really depends on what you mean by "special'....? If you mean "Romantically"...then I think you both just know when that happens... Moving forward and to the next level in a relationship just usually happens naturally I think......and if you don't know if that person wants to go to the next level....just be forthright and ask.....I always like to make checkpoints along the way and will ask where we are in our relationship...that way there is no misunderstandings or misguided ideas of where you are or where you are going!
OMG!! I must really be AWAKE this morning!! I'm thinking too hard...

From one guy's perspective:
1) Online dating forums work for me because bars are too noisy and the women there hide behind alcohol.. and the men think they are macho and want to protect their turf ( even though they never owned it..(her) )
When you see someone out and about.. there is not much to go on besides looks and chemistry
But a smile means only that ..'Hi , I like how you look.. but IF you talk to me.. you will find out that I am already in a relationship..because if I am not in one..I don't feel like smiling so therefore you will never know that I am interested. and as I don't feel like smiling..my body language could mean one of two things..I am nervous and want you to talk to me..or I am nervous and want you to not talk to me"
In the old days.. it was socially acceptable to say hi...hows it going? but in todays climate..only serial rapists and axe murderers make the first move...
so it is either...
"back off dude..I have mace..tasers and/or pepperspray. (and in texas..).a gun in my purse."
or.. "Hi.. I'm soo wanting to meet you... "
2) none..as I don't ever have the need to "talk to people" but when "friends" call I so enjoy talking to them and am glad that they called. Besides..until I get free long distance..( procrastination "R" us) the phone bill at the end of the month would make me...
3) it depends on the person.. the relationship with that person..and the definition of "special" ..everyone on my friends list is special in their own way to me...Just as some people who are not on my friends list are special too..

Mornin GH. 1) Anyone who has been out of the dating scene for several (many) years and has some clue how the internet works. (Yes, I feel that ancient sometimes).
2) Not so much here, as I am a relative new comer here, but I have online games I play, and have made friends on there that have transferred over to real life too. Even went to visit one couple I met, had a great time, and have been back!
3) This one is harder for me. I am the type of personality that does not like being alone. If that makes me needy, then so be it. I won't pretend not to be what I am anymore for anyone. If they don't like what they see, too bad. Stir that in with an amazing level of naivete, and my heart rules my head.... always a bad thing for me, because I am much too trusting, and will believe what someone says, because I want to believe everyone is as honest as I am... silly, silly me.

I have a few MD friends' numbers in my phone, but my phone has no battery power so after Ashley and I talk for an hour a day, and then Rolf and I talk for an hour a day, my phone is dead and I have no time to call anyone from MD.

I think the internet is great for people who work 12 hours a day and live way out in the middle of nowhere (me!). I have many people I have met over the years that I talk to on the phone and many I have met in person. Several have become very special to me, both romantically and as friends. I think it has a lot to do with always being available to me when I really need them. I don't often call on friends for help, I'm too independent, but when it does happen, it's nice to know someone will be there for me.
