I would like to invite my colleagues at my home. In total 17 person, from 1pm to 4 pm (to be considered with my neighbors) but
1. I do not have enough chairs/seats to sit down and I do not want to buy more because I do not want to covered by furniture.
2. I want to serve only cake and wine/juice and coffee, but I can also to suggest since we are an international group everyone is invited to bring a dish from their country, I prefer also dessert.
Do you think is a good idea to have all my colleagues at my home? I did not do it before, here in USA.
I am gratefully for any advice, suggestions regarding my plan. Thank you!

I think an international potluck would be awesome. can you borrow chairs from your neighbors? You can also rent them from a Rent-a-center type business, for a day.
I don't know where you work-do they have a "fraternization" policy? I say...it sounds like fun!

Sounds like a wonderful idea! Do try to borrow chairs as Loreli mentioned but also realize that all 17 people may not attend or all come at the same time! I'd also make sure to offer bottled water. Have a great time!

you could call it an open house rather than a party and state the hours as being from 1 - 4, I think that is what you mentioned. That way you could include your neighbors as well. There will certainly be a few who come and spend the whole time there but many will drop in and have a drink and maybe a bite and then leave. Just something to think about here.
I think the idea of just international desserts would be great.

I too like the idea. You can try asking to borrow chairs from a church. They will usually do it with just a donation.

I was thinking the way Gray was. Sent out invitations for an open house, hours from 1-4 pm. That way, people have an option of when they can arrive and how long they want to stay. You would probably never have all 17 there at one time. They can each bring a dish from their country whenever they show up. That way the food would always be changing. Good luck and let us know what you decide and how it goes.

1. I do not have enough chairs/seats to sit down and I do not want to buy more because I do not want to covered by furniture. You can ask your friends to lend some .....I usually do in this way
I want to serve only cake and wine/juice and coffee, but I can also to suggest since we are an international group everyone is invited to bring a dish from their country, I prefer also dessert. Is this a lunch or a after lunch ? In case of lunch it's a brilliant suggestion that everyone brings something In case of after lunch cake and wine/juice and coffee are perfect
Do you think is a good idea to have all my colleagues at my home? if you have a good relationship ....why not ? this is a way to be appreciated and to appreciate each other out the usual working atmosphere
Have a good day with your collegue !!!!!

Ok no cake for day time cocktails. Pillows, or tommy mats are great. They roll up. I let my parties, even the light afternooners spill out into the yard. Invite your neighbors. Wine and cake, coffee? noooooo Way to many different directions going on. Simplify it. Simple is sexy. Even in a cocktail party. Try a pastry, a simple veggie turn over. Cake is messy. Heart burn heaven with 3 different wines. make the booze yourself. The night before. Having one drink to serve means more time with your guess. Voka, two slices of ginger, and a slice of pineapple over night. yum. Cake we need to talk about this cake. Why cake? Finger sandwiches are a classic and very classy. Grapes, cheeses, and breads. Do I think, it is a good idea to have all my colleagues at my home ? Thats what it was invented for.

The trendiest home parties are serving old comfort foods...believe it or not... Grilled cheese, pb&j, cups of tomato soup, pigs in a blanket. It's very chic and retro. I've also recently done mashed potatoes in martini glasses. There's a bar of fixins...like broccoli, bacon, butter, roasted garlic, cheese, etc. Keep it simple. If you're fussing, you don't have time with your guests. If they see you're harried, they won't relax either.

I don't know if wine is appropriate for coworkers at the hours that you suggest. Food of all nations would be great but that means people will all be there at the same time. If that's what you want, great idea...if not, do an open house kind of thing...jmo of course!!!

A 1-4PM weekend "open house" with wine/coffee/dessert for an international group in a city like Boston sounds ideal (to me).
And with a buffet-style "open house", not everyone will stay the entire time (if they understand the concept of "open house" and the set hours) nor will everyone be seated all at once. Also, don't forget that chairs aren't the only thing one can sit on...stools, trunks, large floor pillows, are all seating, too.
You might check out Chinatown or discount stores to pick up two dozen inexpensive matching or distinctive dessert/salad plates. LOL, if the presentation, company, and food is memorable, no one will remember that everyone couldn't sit down at once.
Best of luck, Moonwalk. Don't be nervous, relax...just entertain like you'd do "back home". And remember to enjoy yourself, too.

Thank you for all your suggestions! I did it! I took Italian foods and deserts from Italian Pastries. I think people enjoyed, and some of them brought some ethnic foods prepared by themselves.
