I'm from Italy (south Italy) and the people of chatroom knows me. I've just curiosity to know what are your thoughts (...if you have some) about my country...and if you had some works or holidays experiences done here in Italy to tell. All your thoughts about that are welcome and i will be happy to answer if you have some questions for me too

I'd love to go to Italy someday.

There was a survey done that said that 70% of Americans believe that Italian Americans are involved in organised crime, or something...and that's bullshit. I have to admit I do know some that are involved in the mob but it's hardly a majority...and there are a lot of us (Italian Americans) around here.

I have to admit that I hate the Italian side of my family. Not because they're Italian, but because they struck it rich and treat my family like crap....we never get invited to functions and we're never sent cards or get any calls. They were very mean to me when I was heavy and all of a sudden when we DO see them they are very sweet to me because I'm thinner.

However, my father makes the best pasta with gravy and meatballs and all sorts of other Italian food.

We're fiercely proud of our heritage (as is my mother on the German side) and I've defended it to the point of getting into verbal fights before. It's a matter of great honour and importance.

There's a difference between Northern, Central, and Southern Italians though it's only a cultural difference. To go deeper than that would be outright racism. I have heard some people say that Northern Italians aren't "real" Italians (due to the proximity of Northern Italy to Austria and Switzerland)...that's racist (I'm Northern and Central Italian) and that Southern Italians are "uneducated"...that is racist as well. We have distant cousins (Buddy Cianci being one) who have Southern Italian ancestry and they are no different from us.

what do I know about Italy ?
I know that Berlusconi was in Bari yesterday..... your town

Lip
I live in North Italy near Switzerland and I can say that we are colder than people who live in the South
I think they are more friendly than us.....this could be one of the greatest differences

I've never been there but i do know that it is the birthplace of much beauty and history. The art, music, Rome, the Papacy, I can't even imagine all the wonders of your country.
Food! well the options are endless....my favourites being fresh pasta, olive oil, breads, olives and of course an authentic antipasto.....wines...what can I say.....I favour Valpolicella

Being English I use to drive down to Italy from Scotland where I lived and worked most , regularly. I love Italy. What I did find, they dont like the English, at all! They are very pro-German.

On One week in Italy, I had a brand new car (one week old) damaged because of car thieves trying to break in. Attempted to be robbed right outside of the entrance to the Vatican of all places!
And despite many attempts to be friendly to people it was almost impossible to get anyone to say "Hi".... oh... in Italian of course!

Lets call them "minor" setbacks. Italy is a very beautiful country and when ever there is a choice to visit any country in the world I would say Italy!

Lastly though.... when driving in Italy........ OMG Break off your rear view-mirror, throw it on the back sit, put peddle to the meddle and aim straight!!!! Dont look at Vespas or you wont survive! Do the opposite to what the road signs tell you!

12knots you are a little bit extremist.....maybe you had a negative experience I'm sorry about that but Italians are able to be nice and polite
We can say Hello especially to foreigners .......
thieves......yes we have them .....like in the other parts of the world
......and you are right ....our roads are jungles and dangerous

"Extremist"? Dont think so.

Traveled through-out Italy. Not just once or twice. I was so astonish at one time I carried out an experiment with friends. Parked just outside Gaeta, where so many people, in the mornings, walking dogs, jogging, etc would pass-by, we wondered how many would say Buongiorno. You know, not one person did. Just scowling stares.

I'll grant you that the Italians I knew in my country are wonderful people. Italians I have met here too. But, in Italy.... it falls rather short.

Another problem is beaches. Unlike all other places I have been too where beaches are free and public, in Italy they are privately owned, so people have to pay. Some beaches, if one can find them are public but often dirty.

Maybe they are just seriously prejudice against the British.

Knots, since Brits are supposedly cold and unfriendly, your approaches obviously meant you were unhinged...

(I used to go thru the same thing in NYC - even there I said hi to everybody...got many strange looks in the process)
