In the early 70's they predicted in 30 years gas would cost as much as a weekend now. After two hundred years the white man apologizes to the Indian...Two billion dollars a year given in free food to poor countries--60th year of it..

Instead of giving things overseas, free, jobs still going overseas Im glad im too old to care anymore..So think real hard and take care of our own first

I agree whole-heartedly.
Keep jobs here, spend more money here.
Find more of our own oil FIRST, then rely on other countries.
There is so much more we can do for ourselves, JMHO.

I am retired and don't have to worry about where the next meal is coming from. Many in this country are not so fortunate and I do feel very sorry for them. I think we should stop sending so much overseas and take care of our own pleople first. I think our gov't is to concerned about what is happening else where instead what is happening here at home.

There was a piece last night on '60 Minutes' about a volunteer health care group that once shared its medical and dental care to Third World countries. They now are providing care here in the U.S. Seems to me we have things backwards here---if we were to model a healthy society, would that not carry over into the world? Instead, we appear to be about 'saving the world' on the backs of our own citizens.

One more thing that bothers me is older children here needing adoption, and people (CELEBS) going overseas to adopt babies.
Sad.

The sad thing is that the $10,000 tax write off you get for adopting a child doesn't even come close to how much it costs.

Our children go without families because people who really want them, can't afford to adopt them.

I think you're right, mom...and Lor, as these children get older, and their fragile selves are damaged more and more, it takes a special person to be able to deal with the stuff that comes with them, emotionally speaking. Trying to undo years of mistrust, hurt and abandonment. Easy to see how they can slip through the cracks, but no less a shame.

When I was married, we looked into adoption and not only do you have to pay a flat fee to cover the attorney and the mom, but in most cases, you have to sign a paper stating that you will be responsible for any additional health care that the MOTHER might need after giving birth. What a crock. Adoption in this country is nothing but a money maker. Well, probably in other countries too. I know 2 families that adopted from China and they had to take gifts to those in high government. What the hell is that about? So many kids and so many good homes, but like you said, can't afford it. Sad.

But I digress. There was someone in our government years ago that said there was no problem with homelessness or with shortage of food. I believe it was a president, but which one, I am not sure - it was several years ago though. But I thought - "What country are you looking at?"

If our oil wasn't in the last great animal reserve in the country, I'd be all for that. We are not the only inhabitants of the planet, and it would be incredibly selfish to destroy the last great animal reserve in order to heat our homes and run our cars when we could be looking for alternatives.

That has happened, if I read this right. I would say that gasoline for a weekend trip now costs more than the entire trip would have cost in the early '70s. And this even after the OPEC embargos of '73 and '79.

ANWR consists of 19 million acres, they only wish open up less than 1%.

But the real problem is our failure to open new refineries.

We must be able to provide for our own needs. And NOT rely so heavily on imports.

If the technology is there for alternatives, the free market will take care of itself.

It's like owning a cattle ranch, and being unable to eat your own beef. It just doesn't make sense. We have the technology to do it safely.

I remember hearing about the activists who sabotaged the pipeline, trying to prove how much of a negative impact it made on the environment.

The more we pay for energy the more we prevent our economy from progressing.

The more we pay for energy the less money we have to invest in alternatives.

Solar, geo thermal, wind power. All have a huge start up cost. You have to spend money to try to save money... The more we spend, the more dependent we become. Why limit our potential, our future?

We have found a good bit of it, we just can't drill in the places that we have found it.

As for ANWR, I hope that we won't drill there for a long time yet to come. There is only so much oil in the world and personally, I would rather buy & burn what is in other areas and keep ours, for the day when it is REALLY needed. While oil isn't cheap, compare it to the price of milk. Now, which do you think is more expensive to produce? By comparison, oil is still cheap.

The truth is we are constantly being fed a lie by the mainstream media. We have plenty of native oil. We have more oil in a clay type form than all of the other countries combined and plenty of oil that hasn't been drilled for as well. We just don't have nearly enough refineries. Right now oil works. No other alternative comes close yet. We need to work on alternatives, but we can't shut off the oil until we have an alternative that works as good as or better than oil. We need to build modern, environmentally friendly refineries, bottom line.
