Here is my story, been on this site less than 10 days, already have dudes from africa pretending to be women asking for cash. The following is a conversation saved from yahoo messenger that we had last night.
After the set up from this chick (the part where "she" tells me how sad she is and can't chat until she is happy) there is a decent pause and then "she" pastes in a whole paragraph! When i later highlighted this portion in preparation to copy and paste myself, I saw the small tag at the bottom for paste formatting options, there were 140 hits online already..
This "girl" still had the balls to deny that she was scamming cash.. Further, she sent me more mail this morning: It said "Love to chat you more" or something like that.

HI igo..  hon, did you know you can prevent foreign contacts on your profile set up? If you use it, you won't get them. That will save you aggravation and your time on the foreigners. They just want money or a green card. But just remember, there are many out ther in USA too. Just have to be smart and know what to look for right away that gives signs to ya. I know it has been discussed before..
I did search for other scam threads, zero hits.
I did search for money threads, zero hits.
Her profile said massachusets (however you spell that)
I had suspicions when I checked out her profile that were spawned by terminology used in her initial emails.. even the pic is obv. fake.
Still bugs me.

i have one for ya....got a wink..winked back....then a email confessing that he was married and looking for pen pals..his wifes name the same as mine...so i wrote back a warm email talking about how busy i am with christmas, how large my family is etc....took two weeks to hear back....an lo and behold his wife had died......i said, how sorry i was to here that...and nothing since...deleted his email address...
got any ideas about this one?

As far as money scammers, just have to be careful on your regular email also. Thats more common than date sites. There's a real good email information website that I use faithfully and helps me to keep eye out on virus alerts, etc. Just email me on MD and I will pass that info to ya!
The dating scammers use bait so to speak. They kind of ruin the trust of the real date tenders that are using sites for their intentions. I know of one site I have a life time membership with that they do auto scan before it ever gets to my site email box. I get a flagged email from the web provider telling me they stopped a know scam from getting to me. But I sure that the use of this type of program is costly so not too many date sites use it. But the block feature and report abuse are total supportive protection features for us members..

igotoosu, This is one of the Nigerian scammers that frequent free dating sites! They prey upon men, and even though their attempts seem quite stupid, they succeed by mass contacts! Most of the ones here use a site called Focus Hawaii International to steal their pics from, and it's worth checking into when you get that pic from that gorgeous woman! It is big business in Nigeria, so big it is noted as the "Internet Scam Capitol of the World!" They passed a law there called "Article 419" to deal with it, if you want to see how extensive it has become, search it online! After checking those sites out that deal with this, you will find that it is just better not to deal with them AT ALL! With particular ones it can be a very dangerous business! Never give them any personal info, don't add them to your friends list, and when they ask for money, copy it and paste it in a report to the site admins, and have them removed!

Scammers come in all shapes, sizes and nationalities. It is unfair to single out just the Nigerians. LOTS of Americans do the same. I've been scammed by 2 women that live less then a 100 miles from me...They didn't want money but they sure did lie.
It's up to us as individuals to see through the scam. If it seems to good to be true, it probably is.
I have good friends all over the planet, even a few in Nigeria. If your gullible, there is a scammer out there waiting for you from somewhere. Welcome to the 21st Century. If you play on the internet, you have to stay on your toes and be wary of EVERYTHING. It is a wonderful tool or a terrible one, depending on how you use it.

I've actually had that very same girl try to talk to me and I just ignored her ass. I knew she was a scammer to begin with...There's another one on here named Dolisweet that is supposed to be in Africa as well that asked me for four hundred dollars and I told her I was reporting her to the feds and the department of homeland security....I wonder if you can actually do that?

 It is absolutely hilarious about the scams going on. Yes ladies, men try it too! If I am going to give to a stranger, it will be in the Salvation Army bucket, or something on that order.
I love the ones where the female is the wife/daughter, niece of a recently deceased father or uncle. The deceased is always a king, prince or whatever. They need to get $50 million into the USA, but they need a bank account established. Put $25,000/$50,000 into an account and they will transfer the funds to that account, and you will get 25% of the fortune. Yeah right. Several dimwits actually have bought into it. They got all the bank info and kiss your USD goodbye. Actually played one out. Got more official looking certificates than you could shake a stick at, verifying funds are in the bank over there, and the scammer is indeed royalty.
When it's slow on the net, gotta do something for laughs. What would Royalty possibly want with dumb Hercules from Brainerd? BTW, these were other sites. Have not had the laughs yet on MD.

You're welcome igotoosu! Taboo, yes the FBI handles complaints of internet fraud, but in order to really have anything done, as far as dating scammers, you have to have been scammed! It kind of stinks, but there are numerous sites that will help and/or teach you how to expose and remove scammers from the internet! It is unfair to single out just the Nigerians. Goodcatch, firstly I recognized this as a "Nigerian Scam" yes there are other countries that have scammers, but Nigeria, actually the African continent, is where the majority of all the scams come from! The one mentioned about so and so died need to get millions from bank, was started in Nigeria, and is why article 419 was put into effect! I have yet to hear of the American, Russian, Ukrainian scammers murdering people to the extent that is going on in Nigeria! Call it "singling them out" if you wish, but they are the worst and most dangerous to deal with! Information is the key to dealing with the problem! I have lost count of the Nigerian scammers I have had removed from this site, around a 100 or so, but they steal someone elses info and come back! Not as many here now because of knowing that they are going to be found out quickly and reported, just not worth the time and hassle for them!

Well now, received an e-mail today from one Mariam Abacha, widow of the recently murdered General Abacha. The General was the head of state of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Her son is in prison, and the new government seized all her assets, except for the $28 million her former husband hid from the government. Of course, why the general did not have enough brains to hide money in a Swiss bank account, is beyond comprehension.
If I help the poor widow out, I will be rewarded with 30% of the money. That's a cool $9.3 million. I need a new car and a yacht.
