Yesterday a 71 year old local real estate broker was killed while showing a rural home to a potential buyer. After he had told her he wasnt interested in buying the home she asked him why he is bothering to look at it.
Thats when he hit her with iron poker from the fireplace and left.
He came back to hide any evidence of his being there and lit the home on fire. She would have lived if he hadnt started the fire because her cause of death was smoke inhalation.
Hes been caught but I just wanted any of you ladies to remember not to trust anyone these days if you are showing a home, especially in the evening...take a along some backup.

I worry about my Aunt Carol being out there by herself showing homes. I think she assumes that just because she shows mostly very high dollar homes, she is safe..
I've told her it isn't against the law for a rapist to look at a multi-million dollar house..

as for me and my house, we look at the other side of the coin. i recently asked about a peice of property. i even got pics. it looks real nice. but its a borrow pit. the pics don't show that. thats the way its been with every single realtor i have come in contact with. kinda like used car sales(people) and teleevangelists. it is not that hard to tell folks whats wrong with a car but, could you get what you are asking if you tell the truth? as i keep saying, we are a capitalistic society, whatever it takes to get a dollar out of your pocket, is fair game. we be jammin

Jankia, The type situation you describe is a very valid reason for caution. In the state of NC safety is discussed as a part of the licensing course...at least it was when I got my license. Also, most firms have safety measures they require their agents to follow. I guess more or less, it is up to the individual agent.

My mom got into real estate as her 2nd career. She would show a house to anybody, anywhere, any time. I used to really worry about her. Thank goodness, now she is retired & that is no longer a worry for either of us.

As for jamminjerry's comment, I am not sure what that has to do with this topic at all, but I would like to address what he seems to be disgusted over. Keeping in mind that real estate laws vary from state to state, without considerations with regards to issues about a property, every potential buyer reserves the right to have a property inspected by a licensed home inspector prior to signing on the dotted line. If you have had problems & have not considered having your properties inspected prior to purchase, then I would recommend in the future, that you obtain such services from a reliable home inspector who is licensed for such in your state. By doing so, you may be covered for some of the issues you mention.

Thanks, Jankia.
People can't be reminded too often to proceed with caution.
Which is what I was explaining to the jamminjerry person he should do in the future instead of bashing all real estate agents, used car salespeople & televangelists. Ah, but the more I read, the more I see where the problem lies.

perhaps the confusion is the title? what if the title was "used car salsmen" or "bankers" or "auto detailers". when we wish to discuss a topic we almost invaribly emphasize it with the intro. perhaps doug and windy whiner could not get any attention with "this old lady got knocked in the head" elsewhere, its like anything that has to be sold. the first rule of selling is ya got to get them in the door. Daisy will no doubt be an easy mark. she is confused from the start! this thread is about real estate agents. what is confusing about that? we are discussing real estate agents! Daisy, are you somehow under the impression we are discussing something else? kinda scroll up, keep going till you get to the top. now, there is a very long box with the title "subject". what is the subject listed in the box? if i happen to discuss something other that the subject listed, more often than not most folks just say "off topic" if Daisy feels that my opinion(s) of real estate agents is off topic please say so. otherwise i will simply relate your confusion to being female. we be jammin

Loreli! this is my intent about jankia! ladies be aware of wolves in sheeps clothing. for outwardly they appear as sheep but inside they are as ravening wolves. jankia has tried to spew his doctrine in the holy roller rooms. few will listen to him much less acknowledge him. i am a wolfhunter, that is my calling. as a human i continue to be puzzled as to why the sheep gather around the wolf as to protect it. but my Father simply told me, "yours is not to reason why, yours is to do or die" it is the path i have chosen. i cannot look back. selah

JJ, I think Jankia's less a doctrinaire than many - I think he walks the walk pretty well, whatever talk he's talking. And I don't think he's a wolf in sheep's clothing.

He was making a point about safety, not about the honesty of real estate agents, which of course is gonna be like everything else in life - buyer beware.

My daughter recently became a real estate agent here in rural WNC and even though a tragedy like what happened to that other poor real estate agent has never happened here, one can not be too sure that someday it won't. For that reason, her very thoughtful and conscientious boss, has a rule in their office for all female agents.....NO ONE is allowed to show a house or property ALONE! Another male agent must go too, and even though it may sometimes be inconvenient for them to do so, all are very willing. All of these male agents are either married or have girlfriends so I'm sure they appreciate the bosses rule for "safety in numbers".

Thanks Heaven but I suppose your comment will only be considered as
your confusion to being female
by the said "wolfhunter".
The title was only to get the attention of any actual real estate agents on here to remember to watch out when showing a home.
If somebody wants to use this thread to discuss realtors in general I dont mind as long as any realtors understand my intent for placing this on here.
I didnt know the lady that was killed personally but I knew the family and used to buy cattle from her husband.

When you are showing a house you must always be aware of your surroundings. It can be scary to realize your in a home with a complete stranger. Especially if your out in rural areas or late at night. I usually took another agent with me.
