All are dead who wrote it.
All are dead who spoke it.
All die who learn it.
Blessed death!
They earn it.

In a sadistic fit of self-improvement, I tried to teach myself Latin. Got halfway through Wheelock's First before I came to my senses...

"Perhaps" I am missing the point of this post, however, I did used to attend Mass in Latin as a child. Does this qualify as on topic??

for those who could learn it....just think that you could talk about anything in front of anybody and no one could ever understand you.

We can do that now - simply by speaking English.
Today's students are having difficulty with any words longer than seven letters and, because of this foolish internet, are not 'hearing" the language as they should.

i'm envious. when i first got married, we visited the local church that had more german than latin. it was a first 4 me! i'll always love latin (my greek stinks).
btw, latin isn't considered dead any longer. ppl r actually using it again n just not n context of law, medicine, etc.

I had seven years of latin - but what good is it for? The only person to talk latin to would be the pope, and I would not want to speak with such a two-legged anachronism.
So, when I learned Spanish, I forgot all latin and freed my brain from it.
That is, what I remember, and I am not sure, if it is correct:
Iam semper ita fuerat
ut die ultime recitetur,
nam consilium scholae constituerat,
ut is, qui non recitat, nescietur.
We used to write this at the blackboard on the last day of the term, it means that the teacher should read a story to us.

a two-legged anachronism stop it!
maybe u took latin 4 the wrong reasons. i just knew i wanted 2 learn latin (as well as just about any other language under the sun). learning a language is understanding the culture (imho). when i read it or speak it aloud, i'm transformed by it. i'm walking n the steps of ppl who used it b4 me n who will do the same afterwards. i transcend time n space when i'm completely submerged with latin n the culture. i love it, n i always will.
btw, u know ur gonna get excommunicated about the anachronism stuff cos u made me laugh n spit my gum out.

wow, ur lucky. they made me take spanish; in college, i switched to french. this was before the language requirement. the latin is a good base 4 the romance languages. i never studied italian, but i can understand it well enough. it was helpful with studying the french, too.
i hope u enjoy the spanish classes. i should've gotten my degree n that. silly me.

no spanish classes to enjoy. I do not like the drill of classes nor learning by rote.
I went to spain, bought a grammar and a dictionary and started learning. Later on, I read piles of novels. And tv and talking were helpfull too.

Mea Culpa, Mea Culpa. Mea Maxima Culpa. Confetior Deo, Omnipotens.
Sorry. Was president of the altar boys in the 8th grade. Could recite all the replies from the priest, in Latin. Sorry new generation Catholics. I miss the old Mass in Latin. Especially the High Mass.

SO Wonderful! And, So True!
Not to get "off topic"... but
it is the same with minor-league sports...
You changing in front of a locker and wondering?
Who else used this locker when they were in the inors?
Willie Mays? Joe DiMaggio? Duke Snider? Stan musial?
maybe even earlier...
Ty Cobb, Rogers Hornsby, Hank Greenberg?
And it is not all that unlikely. It is only in the past ten years or so that they have up-graded some of the ol minor-league parks.
Lotta History there.....
