Have you ever felt the urge to try and "live off the land"?
Hunt and gather your own food? Im talking about the real way, not "hunting" the aisles of wal-mart and "gathering" all you can afford. I mean hunting, fishing, growing fruits and vegetables or collecting them wild.
I must admit, this type of lifestyle has never appealed to me in the past, but it is starting to set in. The desire to get away from all the conveniences and comforts we insulate ourselves with from day to day.
Anyone else ever feel like that?

Yes, I do. In fact I was just talking to my Mom about planting a garden. Now, that works for me-I'm vegetarian. So I will still have to purchase things for my daughter to eat. I can't kill a living thing, so I'm SOL on the hunting.
I make homemade bread...that's about as close as I am right now!
I think the Amish have something with all of their traditional ways. Maybe we should get laws changed and all go back to horse and buggy, too!

That is exactly what I am working at. Would be so great to be self sufficient. Go back to the way we were intended to live as far as I'm concerned. Thats what I'd call really working for a "living" rather than forever chasing the almighty dollar.

You can "buy it now" brand new on ebay for about $13.00 including shipping.
If anyone is interested.
That book on ebay
Hey, this is kind of off the subject, but I found out just the other day that you can go into a Subway and order JUST their loaves of bread!! They sell them for $1.00 each.
I went camping this past weekend, and it was so nice. Im talking tent camping......not a fancy camper trailer. Its amazing how much of our lives we just waste away indoors.....in front of a computer or tv most of the time.....in a trance.
Pity.

After having went without a refrigerator for a week, I can honestly say NO!
However, I really would like to plant vegetables and try canning!

True enough.....you need some ice......or alot of salt. haha
While camping at a state park this weekend, I figured out what their "scam" was. You are not allowed to gather firewood for yourself, but you are allowed to purchase it from the "park host" for $5 per stack (about 6 sticks of wood).
Holy shit!!!! Who could afford to camp at that rate??? Luckily I planned ahead and brought half a truck bed full of my own split firewood......but that severely limited the amount of camping gear I could bring.
If someone had the thought of driving/camping across the country, firewood would become a serious issue for them.

that is why I camp in national forests........no fees and you can gather firewood as long as it's laying on the ground..........no one else around.........total peace

Well now that you mention it yes. Many years ago though.
We had a 1 1/2 acre garden and I put up so much food! Plus we had fruit trees, so I froze or canned those too. We used wood for our heat.
I have to say, I like the way I am living now though. It is very hard work to live even have that way.
National forests are the way to go for total privacy and no electricity.

Yeah, you can do that (national forest) as long as its not hunting season.
The "city folk" who invade Texas national forests during deer season are notorious for shooting anything that moves.
I have thought of camping in the national forest, but I dont know of one where I can fish close by. You can squirrel hunt year round, but Im not so sure I could stomach grilled yard-rat for more than a day or so.

When I was 19 I lived in the mountains of Idaho....near McCall....and the man I was with wanted to live that way.....We hunted and fished and had no electricity and the cabin had a wood stove. He wanted to make sure if anything happened he or I would be able to survive. I learned alot....I never camp with a trailer its always been a tent. My sons know how to fish and hunt and start fires without matches. I passed this on to them.....We have a garden every year at the house....The only thing I really ever need is a lake or stream to wash in...Gotta have my bath...lol

Hm, LJ, get on a park site and look for a place that has fishing. I bet there might be some good rivers.
Also, you might have to decide to eat meat that you wouldn't have before.

"hunting" the aisles of wal-mart and "gathering" all you can afford. Love that phrase lol.
I have thought about it. I think very often about how I would faire back in the days when this was how people lived life. I think about it when we plant our garden every year and harvest from it. How I would make it if this were the only method of getting food. We dont have a large garden so I know we could not live on it alone....but there is that...if factor there. And it is a thought if we ever went through another depression where people would get their food if it came by hard to afford or if something ever happened with food getting to the stores. Certainly something to think about...since we never know what may occur. I always love to listen to my 88 year old neighbor as she tells me about growing up on a farm and how they did not have the convience of a grocery store. How she lived off the land and they ate what they grew or raised.

......when my parents and I first migrated to Australia from UK.....we rented a housing trust house.....and we kind'v lived off he land......sort'v had a huge yard....my father planted every type of vegetable and every type of fruit tree....we almost supplied all the neighbourhood....everyone had little money in those days. We had chooks..(hens)......the only thing we bought was meat......we had everything else except that......other than bread milk and butter. I had wonderful memories as a child.....collecting the eggs.....picking fruit and bucketing them......and taking them to every house in the street justabout. My mother continually baked apple pies....made plum....strawberry....and apricot jam.....and lots of fruit pies. I have never tasted anything as good since. I think it is something I will always miss........and was never as gifted as my mother for making pastries...biscuits ...cakes and all kinds of pies. I sometimes wish I could relive those days.
