Don't buy from pet stores, this just supports and profits these puppy mills that supply them, which encourages this continued practice of abusing animals.

Buy from the SPCA, Humane society, Animal control, Friends of strays, your local paper etc.

Buy from a reputable, private kennel or private party where you can see the environment and the care given to the litter. Hopefully, you can also see the sire and dam on the premises to determine their temperment.

I'm not a huge fan of Oprah but I plan on watching her show today, I'm a huge supporter of Humane Society's, there are so many animals that need a good home and instead people are supporting mean people who breed animals purely for money, and the animals are abused and suffer. I dont know how anyone could be so mean, cruel and heartless. I adopted my Dog LoLo from a local Humane Society, she was originally from a Puppy Mill before she went to the shelter, it breaks my heart.

Gman- Private kennels are people who breed animals, there is nothing reputable about that. And just because you see the environment and its nice doesn't mean the dog will be any better then if you got it from a shelter. I can say that because my doggie was from a horrible situation and now she is an extremely well-behaved dog who is in a loving home and I wouldnt' trade her for anything!

I'm not trying to start trouble here, I am just very passionate about animals and adoption from shelters and places were animals really need good homes. Heck If I could adopt all the animals at my local shelters I would! -Ash

I watched part of the oprah show. I agree with the buying from the humane society, but you should also give to them to help care for animals, even if you arent buying. We donate dogfood at christmas time. I also agree that reputable dog breeders are a good place to buy. If you want a pure breed animal, then that is the route I would go. Not from a pet store. My mother raised, bred and showed dachshunds for almost 20 years. Her and another woman. They took very good care of their dachshunds, hell they were treated better than us kids sometimes... lol. But make sure you really check into the breeder and get references if you can, maybe check with the AKC or like, we were members of the Dachshund Club of America. Just do your homework.

About 6 yrs ago, I did a newsletter project for my graphics class on puppy mills. I did a lot of research, watched videos and let me tell you.. it made me physically sick and I cried while doing the entire project. My heart just ached for those poor animals.

Watching Oprah today brought it all back and I cried all over again. And yes.. my animals are fixed.

We run in completely different social circles it appears. The private kennels that I am familiar with are of the first order...

Three of my 5 cats came from our local humane society & they are the best!
I also go christmas shopping each year & donate supplies that are most needed. And even for birthdays for my daughter & sister, I donated a little money to "foster" a special needs animal at the shelter & in return they sent a pic & history to my daughter & sister of each animal that was helped. It's a wonderful present that gives in more ways than one!

I don't donate one penny or anymore than typing this sentence to the very much anti-hunting HSUS.

The HSUS is only anti-canned hunting. They are not anti-traditional hunting.

Dreams are for people with eyes closed...

LINK

As a matter of fact, just run a Google search on "HSUS ANTI-HUNTING" and see what is easily found.

HSUS can KMA...

Dreams are connected with a person's own reality. They unify the body, mind & spirit and provide insight into one's own being.

I am a proud owner of animals from the local humane society & my pets are more kind & loyal than some people I've known. I am non-discriminatory when it comes to adopting a pet. Parentage is of no concern to me. Others can have their opinions of humane organizations, but for me the Humane Society has provided me with loving, loyal pets who are integral members of my family.

I am proud that I am sharp enough to donate to organizations that I know everything about before I give them my hard-earned money...

The pets that I have owned (verifiable breeds of a known quantity) are very much like the women that I care to converse with (for very long anyway). They cannot/would not possibly deceive who or what they are and they always give at least as much as they receive.

With that, I am done here...
