I don't know if this is the proper place for this, but I wanted people to know about this. A friend of mine just got a phone call from an outfit whose name came up in the called ID as SVC am. I tried to look them up on the internet, no luck. We found a website called 800notes.. and put the number he was called from in, and got a whole bunch of telephone abuse reports about these folks. Seems they call and say they are collecting for some magazines you ordered. If you insist you did not order any, they say it could be from as long ago as 5 years. One gentleman actually gave them his credit card #, and they charged him a total of 3 times for a total of $1150. Watch out for these people, they seem to be collecting personal information.

I guess I would be the only one to fall for a scam like this, or no one else thinks a new member has anything to offer..
at least I tried

18 minutes is not very long to wait for a response.

There's not too many people posting right now so they may have missed it.

Thank you for your concern and posting this warning.

The only reason I am a bit panicky about this, is my friend got that call this morning, while we were on the phone, which means these scammers are active today. And the website where I found out more about them says that they call on Saturdays a lot.. just wanted people to know and be warned.. sorry

I also, just today, got a phone call, which was silent on the other end for a few seconds...then it started ringing as if "I" had made the call. I hung up right away, and reported it to the operator and phone company.
I was wondering if I was going to get a "reverse" long distance charge.

One of the people who reported this scam on the website I found said their number is only known to friends and family, but they got a call.

Random scam dialing doesn't matter if you're listed or not!

I'm on the do not call register.

A computer randomly dials the numbers and it logs the time of day the call is answered.. then they start slamming you with calls at the time of day they think you are at home the most.. my mom and pop get slammed with these calls just about every day from noon til 4pm..

My answering machine always picks up my calls first. I got so many calls after my mom passed away from her creditors that I just couldn't handle it. So I've told family and friends to talk to the machine and if I'm home, I'll pick up once I know who it is. Makes it much easier on me that way.

Remember the movie THE FIRM? Tom Cruise
The whole movie was around that the crime
of the law firm was "moving the money" across
state lines.
What they did might be Federal (i.e harsher).
In this case your friend's best bet is to give the FBI
a call.

This is EXACTLY why I let my answering machine pick up. Despite being on the "Do Not Call" list, there are still ways around that list. Unless I KNOW the phone number on my caller ID, I don't answer.

I don't answer my home phone at all. Nobody has the number except me and the telephone company.

I have it in case I have an emergency and need to call 911.

Put your number on the federal Do Not Call List. Also on your state's list, if there is one. Report all solicitations to your state's Consumer Protection agency. Telemarketing is absolutely intolerable. Or if you tolerate it at all, don't complain about it.
