Feminism is both an intellectual commitment and a political movement that seeks justice for women and the end of sexism in all forms. However, there are many different kinds of feminism. Feminists disagree about what sexism consists in, and what exactly ought to be done about it; they disagree about what it means to be a woman or a man and what social and political implications gender has or should have. Nonetheless, motivated by the quest for social justice, feminist inquiry provides a wide range of perspectives on social, cultural, and political phenomena. Important topics for feminist theory and politics include: the body, class and work, disability, the family, globalization, human rights, popular culture, race and racism, reproduction, science, the self, sex work, and sexuality. For women, not men and women, or women and men, just women. And theres the rip in the idea.
It only swings cause we push and pull it, chop it down and rename this and that in order to understand it. Leave it alone and it will settle.

Leave it alone and it will settle. I see what you mean Burns but isn't there a danger that leaving things alone will allow all the injustice about the way women are treated to stay the same or get worse?
Many of the improvements that have been granted in women's rights have only come about because women have been prepared to fight, argue, debate and demand in order to get what's rightfully theirs.
If we don't ask we don't get!

Oh correcting injustices is very coooo. But does tottertotteringly gona ever get both of our feet on ground or better yet, horizontal together? Wrongs must be righted. Thats a given. I just caution against using one sickness to cure another.
Many of the improvements that have been granted in women's rights have only come about because women have been prepared to fight, argue, debate and demand in order to get what's rightfully theirs. Not just women. Nor is that Feminism. Let me ask. Do you think we would have made the leaps and bound we have made, granted more to come, if only the sect that had the injustice done to them spoke out against it? Great things come to be threw a single seed. Does it matter what the sex is, or the fruit it bares, or heat it cools with its shading?
Thanks for the great conversation WhispsersofSea. My boy just got home and I need to say helloooo before I head to work. Enjoy your Fridays all.

You have a nice Friday too Burns.
And yes, you're absolutely right: sometimes men have been prepared to go out on a limb and help too

Seems to be a bit of confusion from Youbetcha in reference to sexual equality. Women are different from men and I really like our differences. The way a women throws a ball, runs, or the sound of her voice ,I find the differences intriguing That is why we as men like them so much. They are different but very equal.
I have yet to hear any Feminist say women need to be clones of men, this is just fear mongering and not the agenda of the feminist movement. If you have a mother, grandmother, sister, girl friend or wife that you love, you can thank the feminist movement for making their life better and ultimately ours as well.
As far as Dresses verses Pants discussion , wear what makes you happy, it is a personal choice kinda thing.

Play ball with women and men you will see, women just approach things a little different than men.
May have to do with the differences in our bodies I don’t know.
Can you not tell the difference?

I agree about the Dress versus Pants Discussion too. A total red herring

Can you not tell the difference? LOL, no. And my gym classes were mixed (I have the feeling yours may not have been as I think non-segregated gym class is fairly recent, but I could be mistaken and if so I am sorry), so I think I'd know. Some of the girls were much, much better at ball-sports than the guys and devoted their entire lives to it. Especially softball and volleyball.

Regardless, I have very little sympathy for "innocent" people who live in a country that wants to overthrow ours. It's guilt by association. If they were completely innocent, they would leave that country in the same way Obama should have left his church. This is quite possibly the most ignorant statement I have heard on MD.

People are confusing Feminism with the act of being feminine. Two seperate words with different meanings.

In GENERAL, having coached both sexes through high school, girls/women throw the ball with their elbow bent, no matter how hard they try to throw it. Whereas, boys will extend their arm to throw harder. As girls progress in sports, they overcome the throwing motion with practice. I cannot explain why this is so.

Not sure why I am getting back into this, it gave me a headache last night, but here goes. If you have ever watched Little House on the Prairie, or any of the old westerns about families, you would remember seeing women working side by side with men: building their homes, tilling the fields, milking the cows, whatever it took for the family to survive. Even back then there were some women who wore pants (had more to do with the job they were doing at the time then anything else). And I would ask you this, Youbetcha, or anyone else, would a man wear a business suit to do construction work? Hauling timber, climbing around on scaffoldings, whatever. Or better yet, how many men have you seen in tuxedos working on a construction site. None.. so why ask me to work in a dress, when I am getting down on the floor to fix someone's pc because it isn't working properly? I have dresses, and I wear them, at the appropriate times and places...

All I've got to say is, I'm so thankful for the forums. Gives us such great insight into people here. From thread to thread to thread, the same ol stuff just keep flowing and insulting.
And, I was NOT insulted by Raykls' post.

mom, I told my neo-nazi boyfriend about that "innocent people" thing during dinner and I had to give him the Heimlich Maneuver because he choked after hearing it. Yeah. That's how ignorant that statement was.

We have had integrated sports since I was in elementary.
We have NOT had football teams with women on them...
Feminism is a description unto oneself...
