HWF -

I can't comment on 'feminism' because I'm not a woman. I would like to agree with many of the posters here on one matter though. In a pluralist society, the meaning of life is that everyone finds their own meaning in life. Everyone has the right to find their own way through life - without being either indoctrinated or obstructed.

Consequently, there are as many 'feminisms' as there are individual women.

If I close my mind and think of who optimise's who represents Feminism, I must say, Katherine Hepburn is the woman who comes to my mind, not any of the N.O.W. gang.

I hold doors open for anyone who wants to come through, male or female, especially if they are carrying something. The alternative is usually to let it slam in their face. They can suit themselves whether they take the offer or not.

I'm sorry if quoting a scripture is bothersome to some of you, but when I was asked if I thought women should work, I mentioned Prov 31. I'm not here to preach, but I would like to post the passage I was referring to so you can see that even in Jewish history it was not just normal for women to work, but also for some to run their own businesses.

Proverbs 31:10-31 (GW)
10 “Who can find a wife with a strong character? She is worth far more than jewels.
11 Her husband trusts her with {all} his heart, and he does not lack anything good.
12 She helps him and never harms him all the days of her life.
13 “She seeks out wool and linen {with care} and works with willing hands.
14 She is like merchant ships. She brings her food from far away.
15 She wakes up while it is still dark and gives food to her family and portions of food to her female slaves.
16 “She picks out a field and buys it. She plants a vineyard from the profits she has earned.
17 She puts on strength like a belt and goes to work with energy.
18 She sees that she is making a good profit. Her lamp burns late at night.
19 “She puts her hands on the distaff, and her fingers hold a spindle.
20 She opens her hands to oppressed people and stretches them out to needy people.
21 She does not fear for her family when it snows because her whole family has a double layer of clothing.
22 She makes quilts for herself. Her clothes are {made of} linen and purple cloth.
23 “Her husband is known at the city gates when he sits with the leaders of the land.
24 “She makes linen garments and sells them and delivers belts to the merchants.
25 She dresses with strength and nobility, and she smiles at the future.
26 “She speaks with wisdom, and on her tongue there is tender instruction.
27 She keeps a close eye on the conduct of her family, and she does not eat the bread of idleness.
28 Her children and her husband stand up and bless her. In addition, he sings her praises, by saying,
29 ‘Many women have done noble work, but you have surpassed them all!'
30 “Charm is deceptive, and beauty evaporates, {but} a woman who has the fear of the Lord should be praised.
31 Reward her for what she has done, and let her achievements praise her at the city gates.”

You don't have to be a woman to be a feminist? That's the point.. It's about equality but thank you for commenting just the same

Heaven you rock m'dear.. May I open that door for you?

I'll hold a door open while people walk through until the next guy or gal grabs it. Rarely is it a gal that will relieve me of my door holding duty. They're usually not tall enough to reach over my head to grab it. Some things are better left alone and I think most people have figured that one out

If Feminism is about equality there will never be an end to this because men and women will never be equal. If the goal is to eliminate double standards and make way for the unique needs of women, which has been done, great! Feminism didn't stop there and it won't stop if the goal is equality, because that is an impossible goal to achieve.

Well I can agree with you on one thing. You're definitely not "politically correct" in the context of "politically aware or educated"...Whether you realize it or not, Iraq or Afghanistan didn't attack us or attempt to overthrow our government. The US overthrew THEIR governments.

And have you figured out the difference between "feminist" and "feminine" yet?

Thanks Nawty, and I'll hold the door open for people too, men or women. Especially if their hands are full. You're right, it's called manners, or thoughtfulness, or consideration. It doesn't imply that they're helpless, it just acknowledges that you're aware that they're there!

I was going to post this, but I think I had 'puter problems and just gave up - my most influential mentor was a man, and he had more faith in me than I ever had in myself. Behind every successful man is a woman? It can certainly work both ways. At least to me, feminism isn't about being better than someone else, it's about being allowed to be the best you can be in every way.

My grandma was a widow with 7 kids during the depression, not only a feminist but a union organizer (never knew grandpa, he was one of those sweatshop working immigrants who died of TB). She raised her kids, worked, and managed to take the 500 bucks that she got from insurance when grandpa died and parlayed it into a nice piece of change. Her picture in her Sunday go to meeting clothes is on my profile, and I never heard her curse (not in English anyway, Slovenian I'm not so sure about). To me, she was a great example of a woman who was everything I aspired to be - loving, responsible, intelligent and tough. She had an acre kitchen garden, I picked berries and we baked bread and made jam for it together. She could also stand up to anybody on earth, without ever getting down in the gutter. My kind of lady!

I don't agree
This is not the mentality of modern day feminist, only someone with a chip on their shoulder.

It is an act of being polite.

I think I know where I've seen you before! It was that caveman commercial!

Lip...not that you're into scripture...but Hebrews...a very pretty verse that I like to live by...

Be not forgetful to entertain strangers, for thereby, some have entertained angels unawares

Baloney!!! THAT is the job of the female slaves!

"Wakes up while it is still dark..."

So that's why the pre-feminist era was called the Dark Ages.
