How do the Google ads on the right of the screen get chosen?

I just wondered about this.
Is it as simple as screening for key words? 
I just posted on a thread in which I mentioned Turkey and then stuff came up about meeting single Muslim men. Then when I ventured onto the "Life After 50" forum (having qualified last September) I got a couple of things that followed me about meeting Muslims plus a couple of things about the menopause.
I get it - it's words beginning with "m", isn't it?

Isn't that what Google do with their Gmail..scan for words and attach appropriate adverts..so if you happen to have an email that mentions the words "European Continent" ..you end up with adverts for the latest designer inContinence pants from France

And...if you read blogs, there are banner ads that pick up on key words from the blog....some of them are pretty funny too.
