The olfactory is the strongest trigger of memories. And those memories bring emotional feelings to us.
When I smell oil that is used in furnaces, I get this "vision" of cool fall days on the farm I grew up on. Overcast days. Not unpleasant but somehow awkward 
If I smell lilac I think of my bedroom window on the farmhouse on summer evenings and it's a reassuring feeling.

Motor oil.......my dad was a mechanic and it reminds me of him. It's the same thing with sawdust as he did a little carpentering on the side.

Oh sheesh yeah
cut wood.. reminds me of my Bro in Law and hours of helping him build stuff ..
the smell of Material (yeah there is a definite smell to it) reminds me of my mom and the hours spent watching her sew or learning at her side
burning rubber and gas/alcohol/nitro fumes... my brother and ex hubby cause we raced
Machinist oil .. my bro
so many more but those are the strongest they each put me in the BEST mood 
oh and Old Spice cologne.. being loved

in a place very, very far from where i am now
a young woman put her arms around me
nuzzled my neck and whispered
"damn you smell yummy"
to this day, it's all i wear when i want to hear those words again.

The smell of my own homemade gravy instills great memories for me. It reminds me of how my grandmother would make it almost every Sunday dinner. I think about the time she taught me how to make it. But most of all when my grandfather was still live and my grandma was already gone, he said it tasted just like grandma made it.
That smell is the smell of comfort, security and LOVE.

Freshly mowed grass reminds me of being a teenager and trying to sleep in on Saturday mornings when all the dads on the block were up early mowing.
Peanuts and a mix of gasoline remind me of my grandpa, when we would go in his car to get gas. He would always let me put a penny in the peanut machine and get a handful of peanuts.
Lilacs--the most beautiful flower smell on earth. We had the most gorgeous lilacs in our backyard as I was growing up.
Strange isn't it that most of the smells bring back good memories of childhood, and not present times.

Guess Im blessed most of them bring back both ... liek the material smell.. instantly brought back me making my daughters wedding dress and then that lead to my mom making mine or the wood smell.. working with my bro in law all my life and me teaching my son and daughter how to work with wood ... and well the smells from racing is a life long thing too good times good memories .. and I STILL get a warm all over feeling from Old Spice .. reminds me of feeling loved and protected by my bro in law (my father figure) and more than one love in my life and it was the first smell my son wore trying to be like Uncle Clair okay yeah like right now Im smiling big time with all these happy memories

And it's great that all these are HAPPY memories, isn't it? I don't really associate any smells with bad memories. Or at least, can't think of any right now, except hospital smells. But I think those would have sad or unhappy memories for most, unless it's the birth of a child (in the hospital that is).

One smell that does bring back bad memories.. electrical wiring burning ..brings back the memory of my house burning down.. it drowned out the smell of burning wood  and when I smell a house fire I flashback to my own

Smelling a turkey cooking on Thanksgiving always reminds me of family.... 
and like sign.....the smell of freshly cut grass in the summer takes me back to my childhood...sitting in the living room with the windows and the front door open...the breeze blowing the curtains back....ummmmmmmmm

The smell of burning pine reminds of campfires on camping trips as I was growing up. Great memories...
However, certain songs remind me of places, times and people more than any single thing. About every one in my profile brings back a special remembrance.

Lori that reminds me of spring when the snow was melting and there were puddles everywhere! We loved to go play in them, make boats to sail, etc. But not a smell there!
