How many times have you bought a book and wish you would have saved your money?

Well, maybe we can help each other.

If you are thinking of buying a book, post the title here. There may be someone who has read it and can tell you more about it.

If you would like to save money and not feel bad about wasting money on a bad book- Try buying them at a "Thrift Store". I located one run for the Disabled Vets and generally pay from .50 to $1 and after reading I return them so the money gets to them at least twofold.

They are in constant change, so the dates range from newer to older, including the ol classics- paperback or hardcover, fiction or non-fiction. Afterall, even the older books are new if you have never read them.

So, unless you just "have" to read the hot sellers of the present- give the "second hand rose" stores a try.

An added bonus is recycling some of your older clothes and such when you go for the books. Many poor would love to have the stuff you have grown tired of, or heaven forbid, outgrew them.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Katt and I thought having a thread to review books would be a good idea. Some people do like to own new copies of books.

I think it is a great idea, Mom. Those of us who read sci fi RARELY part with our books. Sci fi books are usually the most difficult to obtain in thrift stores or used book stores...especially books in a series.

Wheel of Time should be pretty easy to get. Too bad Grumble left, he read them all.

There is a site called Half.com, it is in with Ebay. You can get some really good deals in there on used books.
I agree with the used book stores too. They don't seem to have them here in our area like they did up near S.F.
Of course, I worked in one and loved it.

I gave Soli a bag of books back in March. They are by Janet Evanovich. Her One for the Money series.
She is hooked.

I am waiting for the new hard back of Jim Butchers to come out in paper back.
The Dresden Files!
Piers Anthony is another one I love.

If someone has a certain book they want to know about, let me know ok?
If I haven't heard about it, I can show you where to go to find out about it.

4/$1.00 for all paperbacks, $.50 for hardbacks here...except when they have a Bag-o-Books sale (which I miss every year ).

Of course my choice of "literature" isn't particularly "selective" or up to date. But at the rate of devouring at least 3 or 4 books a week (occasionally more), I often run across some good ones.

(The internet supplements my "non-fiction" requirements these days...)

Try "The Sword of Truth" series by Terry Goodkind. It starts with "Wizards First Rule."

I have her One for the Money seris also . I have even reread them for the laughs. She writes them so well, you can picture it all in your mind as you are reading the book. Sometimes, I have to stop reading because I am laughing so hard.

I read so many books I can't keep up with the titles! I have to read the first few pages of a book before I buy it to see if it's familiar or not!
I do buy most of my books at a half-price bookstore. If I bring in a new book published within the last 6 months, I get a free trade on that one. I also belong to one book club where I get 3 off the presses mysteries about once a month for $16.00. I always get free trades on those.
Some libraries also have paperback rooms where you can take as many as you like as long as you bring the same amount back.

But I'm game to try to help check out books to see if they're worthwhile.

Edited to add: Grumble left???

Robert Jordan is on my "to read" list. I'm STILL trying to get all of the Ender's series by Orson Scott Card. I REFUSE to pay retail or buy online.

Agreed!!!

Bag of Bones? I fell off the series. I ended up reading "New Spring" by Jordan, then the Tom Clancy books. I'll swing by B & N this coming weekend and get them all. Thanks!

My all time favorite series is Earth Children, by Jean Aual. I know they are old, her last one came out like 3 - 4 years ago. I am hoping she is working on another one. It takes her like 10 years to write one. Well worth the wait.
