If You Died Tomorrow...Part II

I started to ask this question in Charli's thread but thought it may be a bit off topic. So I pose this question to you:

If you died tomorrow, would you be prepared for your family and/ or friends to view what is inside your computer?

I heard this question asked on the radio the other day and realized I had never thought about it. Sure, I always worry that my computer may be stolen and all my banking and personal info may be exposed. But after hearing that question, I started wondering just exactly what else I have in this computer that I wouldn't want my family to see. I AM quite the packrat and have favorites that I bookmarked out of curiosity but have never gone back to.

So what do you need to clear out of YOUR computer?

Just got a new computer....everything is ok......I will be much more cautious from now on.,,My IT at work scared the SH*T OUT OF ME......
I had a very spicey conversation with a man on my old computer,,,but erased it. Apparently that means nothing, just false security. I've learned my lesson
Hell, you don't even have to be dead to have a family member etc check out your history

....nothing at all to need to clear out of my computer, but I will say, the second drawer down in my dresser, hidden under a nightie or two, has a couple of B.O.B.'s..........

what with my poor health of the past few years that topic wanders my mind all of the time... heck I sleep in sweats these days because I've had to be taken to the hospital a couple of times, lol, and it can be breezy otherwise, and the EMT's won't let you get dressed.....

Katy...before they locked us out of downloads at work, I was able to hide a Yahoo IM in one of the computers. Thank goodness my conversations weren't racy because I found the file with all of my conversations stored...the day before IT found the Yahoo. Yep, you DON'T have to be dead to have someone view your history or files. That's why I have my admin password protected. The guy who watched my house the last time I was gone was a bit miffed that he couldn't log in.

Red... That's one thing I don't have to worry about. I don't own any BOBs.

Nah...we'll talk more.

Ummmmm Grumble? Just HOW breezy would it get?

I'm downloading a shredder right now. As for actual paper? That could take me a month to find what needs shredding!

I got rid of four bookmarks just now. They didn't even work they were so old. And check out this one that I'm getting ready to delete. I remember my daughter and I wondering what ever happened to white dog poop. I wonder how many more links I saved on that search?

I have nothing on my puter I am ashamed of...and if I should pass and my family goes snooping in my private things, then they deserve to see whatever is there.

Good question.

A charity in England was donating old drives from computers and sending them to the third world. they were supposedly.. 'clean'

yet computer experts ther still mamaged to access bank files.. how? I really have no idea,, theymust be burried somewhere in there.

As for me..my computer is passworded on everything.

Wiping a hard drive is not as easy as it sounds. The government requires a secret classified hard drive to be rewritten at least 3 times as a minimum and there is still no guarantee that it is clean. Even unclassified HD’s are not allowed to be thrown away. Higher classifications are even harder to fully clean per regs and usually are either destroyed or just stored after rewritten. Even to shred a hard drive is not cheap or easy because of the possibility of hazardous material within the hard drive it’s self. Then even getting the hard drives to a special company to shred them is another issue of delivering and handing classified hard drives over for transportation.

The best thing to do when you trash your old PC if you are worried about information on it is to just take the hard drive out rewrite it several times with special software and store it away.

I still have all the HD’s I’ve ever had in pc's and yes there are a few but they do not take up much space really…
