Some people think it is silly to grieve for a pet. But some pets become good friends. My father's boxer named Otis had to be put down today. Otis had some unknown condition that caused his health to deteriorate to the point that he couldn't even walk anymore. Odie (as we called him) was so much fun.
I would walk into my dad's house, and soon as Odie heard me, he would come running. He would jump that heavily solid body up onto me nearly knocking me down each time. Dad used to get irritated sometimes because I would get Odie so worked up it was hard to calm him down. I've known Odie longer than my youngest child.
My little sisters don't know yet. Its going to kill them. When dad moved from Chester to Jersey, he pondered not taking Odie. The girls cried their eyes out for him to go. This is gonna hurt them so bad. I could hear in my dads voice how much its hurting him.
My eyes can't stop tearing up. Its like losing a member of the family.

Mak...my sympathies. They're not "just pets". They're often the lifeblood of the household. Unconditional love. Personalities. They're not dumb animals...and some can only understand when they become a pet owner. I love my dog as I do my children. He's part of me. Big hugs, Mak. Wishing you comfort at what has to be a grievous time for you. I'm sorry for your loss.

Oh, I know how it is. I still have problems thinking of some of my pets. They are a part of the family.

I am so sorry. I know you heart is heavy right now. When a best friend leaves us, the pain sets in. I am glad Odie brought you and your family the laughs and love that he did. Now he is bringing love and laughs to others in heaven.

I have 3 "elderly" pets myself and dread the day that I will loose one. They have been with me through so much good and bad!
My sympathies!

Thanks a lot everyone. Had to leave this thread for a minute because of the fact that you guys get it, kept me tearing up. I appreciate it. I have close friends that have laughed at me for the way I cry for my pets, they just don't get it.

Makya, I'm so sorry and so totally understand your pain. My three beagles, all deceased, hold a place in my heart no other pet has ever filled. Just be glad you had the companionship with Odie that you had and carry that forward with you.

I completely understand!!
We have a lab named Boomer..he is almost 13 and is showing a lot of signs of having heartworm and is in a lot of pain from bad legs(labs tend to have hip and leg problems) I know the time is going to come soon that we will have to let him go and we are already missing him. Pets ARE a part of the family and it's normal to grieve over their leaving us.
Hugs Makya

My SO has a 14 year old chow who can just barely walk these days, but he still comes over to me for his hug...I so dread the day when he has to be put to sleep...I'm tearing up noiw just thinking about it.It's probably just a few weeks off, when it starts getting really hot here....
Makya, you have my sympathy...it hurts so much to lose them...

Makya, I am so sorry for your loss. Our pets are just as much family as our children are. At least my Heidi would come when I called her. She was my only 'daughter' and her loss will be felt for a long time. My comfort is the thought that she and Boots (our cat) are back together again, and most likely tearing around in Heaven and having a ball with all my others that have left over the years. Don't let anyone tell you that you can not or should not cry. Our tears are the way we honor the ones we have lost, and our pets are just as much a part of our lives as anyone else in them. Hugs, Syn
