Yep. And we have one computer that is online in this house and it's smack dab in the middle of the kitchen. And she is free to use it any time she likes.

I can see there's a huge difference between the way I was raised and the way you guys have raised/are raising your children.
My parents gave me my Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) when I was six years old. It came with an entire box of games for me to play...and I did play them. They didn't have a limit, but after awhile they would tell me they wanted the t.v. off. Then next came the Nintendo 64, the PlayStation 1, the GameCube, the PlayStation2, and the X BOX 360. We'll probably get the Wii next.
My parents let me use the internet when we first got it in 1998...it was off in the dining room (that is now my room...when it became my room, the computer was still in there), and sometimes I was home by myself using it. I would call my mother if I saw anything objective.
However, they didn't let me get a cell phone until I was sixteen...
They did all these things for me because a lot of the time I was inside...and if I wasn't playing with Barbies, drawing, or reading, I was watching Nickelodeon or doing absolutely nothing. Video games and the internet provided me with entertainment and helped me open myself up to a bigger world.
So I wonder what the whole thing is with cell phones, but video games and internet (that has instant messaging, same thing as txt) are ok???
Could someone try to explain that from a parent's point of view?

The internet is for homework. My daughter does have some video games, carefully chosen for maximum enjoyment.....They aren't cheap. And she and her friends love her DDR. And we have an old N64 that we play together. (It's important to laugh and scream with your kids every day)
But most children won't stay inside if they have nothing to play with. They will hang out outside playing, bike riding, laying on the lawn on blankets and talking. Basketball in the driveway....that sort of thing. It's wholesome and they enjoy it too.
The most telling thing?.....she's not chomping for more freedom. She's perfectly content.

I know most children won't stay inside, but I was just strange and the sun always bothered me.
So my parents figured that they should just buy me video games and let me use the computer so I was at least doing something.

Our computer is in the middle of the living room....I watch everything.... The kids need to use the house phone to call their friends....the rule is : not on a school night (cause we get home after 7) and they have to ask on the weekend. So.............
I'm the meanest mom EVER...........but I still say NO to the cell.........

One of the problems I have with it is you have two children sitting in the same room texting instead of talking.
And i will be one of those "worse moms in the world" too as mine is already asking for one.

Sometimes the kids grow faster then the parent can or want to keep up.

Here's the problem....my daughter and my friends daughter were at my job all day on Friday....they were texting each other on our cells..... When I read the text later, they were talking about some boy....
is that not what you said? or meant?
Sometimes the kids grow faster then the parent can or want to keep up.
and some parents KNOW when they are going up too fast

Angel, you know what to do in your heart. Do what you think is right for your circumstance.
I did buy my youngest 2 cells, and he lost them. All in one year. I think after 9/11 I got scared and bought him one for when he might need it.
He still doesn't have one and he is 23 now. ( he has a land line.)
Our PC was in a computer room. They both had TV's in their bedrooms too , with their many game systems. Living where we did, 6-8 months out of the year, it was either really cold, too wet or too hot to be out side! When the humidity gets up in the 70' and 80's it is too dangerous to be out there.
Lol, the only cell I have is a Tracfone. I don't need one if I have a landline with unlimited long distance right??

I think my kids are the only ones in the family without cell phones...we go to family functions...all the kids are texting like crazy....that's about the only time my kids get mad...is when..."EVERYONE ElSE IS DOING IT"....lol...i can see using them in emergencies...if the kid is going to be alone somewhere...but mine haven't reached that point yet....i'm sure they will eventually get one...but only when it's needed.....so many great points in this thread though....x x

It is a personal family issue that only you can decide what is right for you and your kids... but even with that said i have to agree with Katt, Becky and Tilly...
I guess i go back to the ole "if everyone else jumped off the cliff with no parachute would you also just because they did"? Following the crowd is not always a good thing or bad. There are many different issues pros and cons either way.
But one thing i do agree is the media will push the issue and try to push your buttons as a parent to further their market base. I even had a call from a cell phone provider about a month ago call and wanted to talk to the teenager in the house... like i would have even agreed if i had had one...when i ask what they wanted to only talk to them about she replied cell phone use and getting their service... i do have an issue with that type of marketing ploy used as supposedly research BS....
It is hard as a parent to admit that it's pass time to accept our kids are not living in an innocent world as we did... IMO it is the adults that are to blame by allowing them to grow up and be exposed too soon ...but you still can not bury your head in the sand and try not notice or deal with it.... reason you can not put the genie back in the bottle once you or someone else lets it out...but you can not ignore it either.... double edge sword....
IMO it's sad..and i'm all for technology but not at a childs expense....
