... it happened Thursday, and my favorite car was banged up pretty bad. The night before, I had nearly filled the gas tank up. The car is currently undriveable. Now... I need to figure out a way to get the gas out of that car, so I can put it in my other car. I was told that there is a contraption you can get to syphon the gas out. Any info from y'all would be greatly appreciated!

Sorry to hear that, Stormy. All I've ever seen on tv is a garden hose.

Sorry about your car and hope you're alright, hon.
See if you can get down to an auto parts store (or even a lawnmower dealer or boat shop). They probably have one of those plastic siphons with a squeeze ball-thingy. But the best kind is one of these "Simple Siphon" dealies:
http://www.siphonsonline.com/
Heck, just get any kind of tubing that'll fit into the tank (get past the "trap", if your car has one) and suck on the hose...being sure not to suck the gas, of course. When you can see the gas getting toward the end in your mouth, cover the end (or crimp the tubing) and quickly put it into a container that's lower than the gas tank.
Of course you'll have to do it 15 or 20 times if your tank was full to the brim.
Bummer.
(You may need a helper -- someone to put the gas in your other car while you crimp the tubing or fill another gas can. And for heaven's sake, DON'T SMOKE while you're working on this project! )
Good luck...it'll be worth it in the end.

Stormy,
Sorry to hear about your wreck - glad your okay.
Everything I've read from the other folks seems right on compared to what I know. I'd get down to your local hardware store - the mom & pop kind of place - & ask for help there. They should be able to hook you up.
One thing - just being the devils advocate.
Is the wrecked car going to be repaired? If it is, I'd recommend not fooling around with it. Once the car is fixed, you'll have to put gas back in it anyway. I understand times are tight, so you don't want to loose the gas if the vehicle is to be junked. (Especially if it was larger vehicle with a 30-40 gallon tank.)
Around these parts, the price of gas is actually falling - about a dime in the past week. Around here, you'd be cheaper off using todays gas, then you would gas from a week or two ago. (Again, assuming that the wrecked vehicle will be fixed at some point.)
Syphoning does work. But it is a tedious process & not a lot of fun. If your vehicle is going to be fixed - not sure it's worth the trouble.

As far as I know, I'm okay, though my neck felt kinda funny for about 5 minutes after the crash. I'll tell you something else, if I hadn't turn my steering wheel to the right when I did.... instead of y'all offering me advice, y'all would literally be paying your respects! SUNBABE, now what was it you said(Pauses to light cigarette) about not smoking while trying to syphBLAM! While I have y'all's attention, let me also ask you this... The insurance company doesn't know it yet, but they ARE GOING TO FIX MY CAR BACK TO THE WAY IT WAS! Their client rammed into ME... SHE got a ticket. I've already given a copy of the police report to my next door neighbour, who is a lawyer. Another friend of mine told me earlier today that when his wife was rear-ended by some guy who was an "assigned risk", that guy's insurance adjuster said they were going to total her car and give them only 500 bucks. That friend of mine told the adjuster, "Well, the next person you'll be hearing from is my lawyer.". He called a lawyer, the lawyer called the adjuster, and they got the car fixed. The car that I was driving is - as I stated in my initial post - my FAVORITE car. It is a 1983 Nissan, and it is VERY fuel-efficient. I will NOT accept ANY other option than getting my car FIXED. Do any of you think that I have a chance? P.S. I think I still have a picture of that car on my photo page, if any of you care to see it.

Stormy I know you really love that car and I don't know how bad you were hit but if the frame is bent to any great extent you might want to reconsider and see if you can find a good body somewhere to put the drive train in. That would be easier and cheaper than fixing a bent frame. And if the frame is bent straightening it out will never put the car back the way it was. It might be close but it won't be the same. When metal gets bent it stretches so when you bend it back it is not quite the same size or orientation that it was before. Of course it is up to you but I would not accept any car that had frame damage.

Not sure if sticking to your guns regarding fixing your car is going to work out.
An 83 Nissan probably blue books at less than a grand, if there's more than a grands worth of repairs - I don't think the insurance company is obligated to pay the difference.
I don't know that for sure, but that's my guess. Check with your agent. I'm guessing that's a fairly common scenario, so there might be an "industry standard" for such an event.
But then again, with insurance companies - who knows. Asking your agent is free though, & probably knows the right answer.

Nice legs ...uh, I mean nice car.
You may have to have an attorney fight for full repairs. Insurance companies SAY they'll only give you "replacement value", but with the right leverage (an attorney threatening a big ol' lawsuit both for medical and vehicle and any other expenses or lost wages, etc.) they'll generally cave in and do the repairs...maybe even your insurance company will stand at your side in this fight. It's YOUR right -- don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
PS Get your neck and whole bod checked out, "just in case"...sometimes it takes a few days or even longer to see if there's a problem that'll bother you down the road. You can submit the bill to the other people's insurance, btw.

Thanks Sunbabe... you have nice legs, too! Actually, I must've taken the picture of my Nissan off of my photo page. The one you posted is of my Buick.
You know... I'm really kind of conflicted about this... part of me wishes that the BUICK was the car that was hit. But, that IS my "nice" car, and it's also 12 years younger than the Nissan. But the Buick is ALSO the gass-guzzler. I guess all of that doesn't matter now... what's done is done.

Oops, you did say "8-something Nissan", didn't you?
Just goes to show what I was looking at when I snitched that pic.
Hey, if they won't budge on fixing your car, you can always see if they'll replace it with one of these:

(This is the one I have my eye on )

it happened Thursday, and my favorite car was banged up pretty bad. The night before, I had nearly filled the gas tank up. The car is currently undriveable ...........STORMY....same thing happened to me almost 3 weeks ago. I didnt have my can insured.......and didnt have the money to get it fixed. However...Just a few days ago my mechanic rang up.....said he would have it fixed up and in my driveway in a few weeks........and I could pay him bit by bit whenever I had some free cash.......GOSH....WHAT A MIRACLE......he was an angel sent from above. Would never have had the money to get it fixed for one year or more......so my heart goes out to you........I know how you feel.
Before my mechanic rang....I had been racking my brain trying to work out how I could get wheels.......even thought of geting a gopher at one stage....just to get me to the shops and back.....LOL
If your meaning petrol re gas........you would need to get a cyphen........it will come out easily..........but if you mean *gas * like we have in Australia.....and not petrol.........then I wouldnt touch it. Get an expert to look at it.
All the best..............

Stormy heres the flip side of a car accident my daughter caused. She made an improper lane change and hit a 1991 Toyota Corolla. The police officer at the scene said there was minimal damage to both vehicles, and there were no injuries. The guy she hit got out of the car and started screaming at her. The police officer was kind enough to stay with my daughter till I arrived. She called the man she hit Mister Road rage. He also got a ticket for no proof of insurance. I am not sure if the damages on his car were more then the car was worth, but i am guessing thats what the insurance company was going to do. Just pay the value of his car. This accident happenned in October. A few months later the man claimed he was injured in the accident. The insurance company said he had obtained a lawyer and was going to sue my daughter. He was asking for a ridiculous amount, for doctors visits MRI, and emotional upset. My daughters insurance company believes he has a pre existing condition. My daughter freaked out and was upset that she may have injured someone. The condition he has could very well have been caused my natural wear and tear and part of the aging process.
I hope you get your car fixed.. I guess anything is possible as my daughters case shows. Be careful with siphoning your gas. I discovered that I had a small hole in my gas tank after filling up my car. I took it to my mechanic immediately and he siphoned out the gas for me ( what was left of it) he just stuck a hose in the tank, put the car on the lift and filled the gas can.
