Today, my son brought home a bucket of Yabbies

and a Turtle....

He said, "Dad, I got you a present",... What do you do? I have a spare fish tank for the Yabbies. But the Turtle? Kids ...........

Yabbies? Wow! It always amazes me what we call things in different parts of the world. Here in my neck of the woods, we call those Crawdads. In the southern states they call them Crawfish.
I couldn't tell you how many of those my son brought home when he was little. He loved going crawdad "hunting". It seemed I was always buying him butterfly nets... he called them crawdad nets. I did talk him into putting them back in the crick (creek, stream, branch) after the first bucket died.
My daughter drug home a box turtle like that once too. I finally talked her into putting it back in the woods (forest) when it bit her finger and she swung it around the room and it wouldn't let go!

I remember when I was little one time bringing a salamander home and naming it "Stephanie Tanner". I wasn't allowed to keep it, though.

There were 52 in the Bucket. I let him keep 10. He decided to keep the ten most massive Yabbies I have ever seen. We released the remainder back down the creek. The turtle, I think, will end up in the pond. It's all good.

Not my kids...but one day-my Mom did.
She was driving home from the store and saw an elkhound running loose. She stopped and called out "Ellekia" (my dog's name) The dog ran to her and jumped in the car, started kissing her. My Mom thought my dog had gotten loose and was on her side of town. So-she brings her to my house-and there sits my dog...

That's funny, Loreli!
This past winter there was a cat on my porch. "Sassy! How did you get out here?" I asked. She slinked off as I spoke to her! I tried to coax her to me but no dice. I went back into the house and there sat Sassy on the couch. It was my cat's clone on the porch!
I'd never brought home a pet but I remember continuosly begging for a cat. We always lived in rentals or with friends/family that wouldn't allow pets, so this probably explains why I have four in my own house!

I loved animals as a kid, and still do. We rarely had the usual pets though. A puppy followed me home from school one winter day. Mom wouldn't even let us bring it in the house. She did fix a bed for it in her car though. Poor thing had to freeze outside all night in a cold car. The next day my dad found the owners. My grandfather would mail me turtles he found on his travels. He also got me rabbits. And I had a white rat that we had had in school when we did an experiment on 2 rats--one got good food and one got junk. I got the junk food rat when we were done with the experiments. She was a good pet though. Now I tend to bring home all kinds of strays. It's my house and my say! I stick mainly to cats though. They're a lot easier to care for than dogs.

When we were little, we had a pet guinea pig named Sam. My brother and I were watching Kaptain Kangaroo one morning, I heard him say "hi sam", then jumped up and yelled. It was a field mouse in his lap!
