Summer is here and so is mowing the grass... So...I am asking the lawn EXPERTS here on MD for their advice!!
Is it better to mow back and forth in a straight line?
OR
Is mowing around and around in a square or rectangle and ending up in the middle the way to go??
AND
Should you change directions every other time...or mow the same way each time..
Also......Does waiting until the grass gets a little longer to cut it help your lawn?
Which way is the best to have the healthiest lawn or does it really even MATTER????
Spring's inquiring mind wants to know?!?

After all this rain, I'd like to spray Roundup on all of mine.
First-make sure your mower blades have been sharpened. It doesn't matter if you mow back and forth or in a square...but if you don't have a bag, either way you will be "re-mowing" cut grass. But, at least in a square, it all ends up in the middle! I used to have my lawn treated ONE time at the beginning of Spring...it really helped with weeds.

Keep your grass at 3 inches, and wear some kind of cleet (sp) when mowing so you help your soil too.
You want to mow so that the grass ( if you don't bag it) is blowing to your left on the part that has already been mowed. Other wise you are going to mow grass that has already been mowed.

Leave those grass clippings where they lie! It acts as a mulch and keeps your lawn healthier, which will cut down on the amount of weeds

I use to pick up the clippings and put them around the trees and in the flower bed.

Also, change your mowing pattern every time. Diagonal, back and forth one direction, then 90 degrees to it the next. And if you have grubs in your neck of the woods, you might want to treat for them in the next few weeks.

I always mow straight lines back and forth in the front yard but in the back yard, I do it different every time. I love my mulching mower...no clean up when done! I have a few bare patches in the back as the previous owners had a giant digging dog! Eventually I'll replant there.

Oh Thank you all...... I know this looked like a silly thread....but I really wanted to know this information.
Loreli....I had the blades sharpened and the mower serviced at the end of last season.....so I'm on track there
Katt....wearing cleats huh? I have never heard that one before....so do I go to good Will and buy some guys old football shoes? So letting it grow out some does help? Well I accidentally let it get long in the back due to rain...but it was longer than 3 inches I'm ashamed to say!! I think the "Neighborhood Association" probably had a letter ready for me!
Bacon......So changing mowing patterns really is the way to go? I will try that!
Becky.....my daughter helps once in a while! That is the best way for me I think! Jalon.....I have a mulching mower too!!
I should of had my yard treated for dandelions at the beginning of the season, but didn't and had dandelion hell!! Next year I will be on track!

Ok- I got a nice email from someone... I hope everyone knew I was joking about the Roundup. With all the rain, my grass was knee high before we could get to it. I had to pay a company 55 bucks to come over with a special mower.
Statement is retracted...for those that don't know I was kidding. I know it kills EVERYTHING...

The only fertilizer that your lawn needs is from leaving the cut grass on the lawn, it breaks down and enriches the soil which feeds the lawn. Please don’t use chemical fertilizes; it becomes run off when it rains and pollutes our rivers, lakes, oceans and streams.

I knew you were joking Loreli....
I actually felt the same way after all the rain.....I had weeds I thought were flowers winding around my lightpole until someone so nicely pointed out it was a weed! I immediately cut it down....
Thanks Ken....we do have to protect our enviroment...too many chemicals everywhere we turn now... so it's nice to know I am on the right track at least. I am learning alot here....that's why I love to ask questions about things I know nothing about! Everyone is so helpful!

Mowing is something I just don't have to worry about right now. My lawn hasn't been mowed in over a month now. No rain = no grass. No grass = no mowing! So I'm not mowing! I was going to use my rebate check on a new lawn mower, but had to pay bills instead, so I'm glad I don't need to mow, but we do really need rain badly down here in Texas.

wear some kind of cleet (sp) when mowing so you help your soil too. Do they make cleets for riders?
Must look into this.
