Aside from the obvious damage and loss, I keep thinking about how this is going to affect people for months or even years afterward...as well as those who are safe (high and relatively dry, who may lose their utilities -- or their jobs or their stores -- for who knows how long)

LaughTilYouPuke had a close one last night, according to her blog. Aside from the tornado/storm which did damage, without electricity, her basement's going to flood.

I wonder if Loreli still has power. She said she's on a hill, but I wonder if she's still trapped because she's on a dead end road. I hope she has enough supplies and help with her daughter (as well as herself). And I hope her son remains healthy and doesn't pick anything up from his rescue work.

And that beautiful river alongside Jankia and Brenda's place ~sigh~ ...plus the rest of the community might be even more vulnerable. Keep those little chickens dry, Brenda...if worse comes to worse, pack them in styrofoam coolers (with air holes) and they'll float behind the getaway boat.

Augh, it's not only the towns and cities, but the farmlands. This is going to have a big impact on the whole country for sure...it's already affecting some of the rail and trucking distribution systems -- on top of the price of deisel/gas.

...and out here in the West, we're fighting fire after fire because the forests and ranges are so bone dry. Unfrigginbelievable.

Like I said on a blog earlier, SunBabe...

Floods, droughts, tornadoes, typhoons, tsunamis, earthquakes...who pissed off Gaia?

83 of our 99 counties have been declared disaster areas.
We are on day 3 of a REQUIRED no shower/bath, etc...phew! Of course I don't stink, but everybody else does
Also not to flush every time, NO washer, dishwasher...drinking only.

My power has flickered, but they planned ahead, as of this morning only 200 were without power. No telling how many homes are a loss...and many businesses.
If I already said this, I apologize, but my son had a sale pending on a beautiful ranch, had it inspected, paid his earnest money. Didn't close, though. 4 blocks from the river.

He doesn't know how they do things now...

If it didn't close yet, he may lose his earnest money (or they may hold it in escrow until the property is sold to someone else...which happened to me one time) ...but he doesn't have an obligation to the mortgage or even the title yet, right?

(You smell fine from here )

My power is back on and we are surrounded by the sounds of chain saws. It pays to help the farmers when they are in need. They show up with generators and we go from house to house with my pool pump and empty basements.

There is nothing like living in a small town for letting you know that you are never alone. If the baby calves wandering through your back yard with the fences down don't do it....it's waking up to see a horse drinking out of the drainage ditch in the mist. Surreal and stunning. The world goes on and even thrives.

The damage in Cedar Rapids alone was a preliminary $737 million, Fire Department spokesman Dave Koch said.

(I'm glad ya can't smell me, Sunny!

We went down there tonight....it is unreal. Traffic was half hour to get through...not bad for reduced to 2 two lanes

One of the major appliance production plants (Amana) fired 200 employees today...my son's friend said. I bet they'll all be called back, and then some, when people rebuild.

This is the first chance I've had to check in here....praying all are safe and dry.

Loreli -- I didn't get the chance to answer you about your offer for household goods. I appreciate the offer, but there are going to be plenty of people there that will need those items. Pass them on with love from us both.

Glad to hear Meems is fine as well...what a week we've all had.

There's nothing like the smell of a newly opened box of Crayolas to take you back to your childhood and make you feel like all is well!

I love you guys...I'm so glad you're all ok!!

Aww, you're all so sweet!
Tilly-email it to me?

ny times

local

And I love all of you!

They moved my son's deaf communications business out to a college.
Hopefully the companies or city will hire for cleanup and assistance with business.

The water has receded 18 inches. They said it would take 10 days or more to get back to a manageable flood stage. It covered all of downtown, 1000 city blocks. Only one injury, a twisted ankle. Amazing.
