I didn't realize that Cedar Rapids was such a small city. With 24,000 people evacuated, that's 20% of the population! (Not to mention all the rest who will be affected by the changes the floods have brought)
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080614/ap_on_re_us/midwest_flooding;_ylt=Al8qiBVvkuY8DPFLep.caNFH2ocA
And out West, in (mostly) Northern California north of Sacremento, they've already lost over 50,000 acres just in the last couple of days...at least 66 homes burned down, so far, and ongoing wildfires which are nowhere near contained -- and it's windy.
Maybe ParaLegals screwy idea of boring though the mountains to create nationwide canals isn't such a bad idea afterall.

Sunny...there's also the fire in the Santa Cruz mountains which burned over 3,900 acres and destroyed at least 29 homes.

Also, right here in the middle of Stockton along I-5 last week, 28 homes were damaged by a brush fire along the freeway. The winds whipped the fire right into a neighborhood.

Wow Grumble...I heard there was a tornado. I didn't know it was that bad It was sunny yesterday morning, then clouds moved in fast. I fell asleep to thunder, lightning and rain like crazy. It's overcast again today. At least maybe the rain will wash some of the streets that were flooded.

Are you able to leave your house yet, Lor? I've been worried about you being housebound.
And with the ground being so saturated, coupled with even more storms, it was inevitable the flooding down-river would be horrendous...the water has to go somewhere ~sigh~

Yes...they actually opened a couple bridges downtown today. There is garbage, furniture, debris everywhere. So far, over 14000 residential FEMA applicants, and they had to move all of our city, state and federal offices somewhere else. Red Cross of Texas is here helping, FEMA trailers and insurance semis all over town. So many businesses may be lost. Only one looting reported....that's good.

I just purused the web clips, articles and photos. ...and things are just beginning for the ones down stream.
I'll bet there's going to be more directly affected by this than there was in Katrina, eventually -- without as high loss of life, thank goodness (hopefully). 5 million acres of cropland destroyed or messed up already! ...they were already talking about food shortages this year BEFORE the floods.
...and I just read where Oklahoma has been declared an official drought emergency state. Go figger.

Sun...California is in a drought too...and that has more impact on the food supply than the floods, I think:
California produces nearly 39 million tons of fruits, nuts and vegetables, accounting for more than half of the U.S. production.
The state produces 350 different crops and commodities, making it the most diversified agricultural economy in the world.
Nearly one-third (29 million) of California's 100 million acres of land are devoted to agricultural production.
Facts from SunWorld
A side note...did you know that California grows 100% of the USA's almonds?
This is from my daughter's state report. I can't remember exactly where we found this information so I can't quote the source.
The mild climate of California and the rich, fertile soil pair up to make California able to produce a variety of agricultural products all year long. Crops with year-round seasons include lemons, artichokes, avocados, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, lettuce, mushrooms, potatoes, spinach and squash. There are even some crops that are only commercially-grown in California! Those include almonds, artichokes, figs, olives, persimmons, pomegranates, prunes, raisins and walnuts. California grows over 350 different crops and grows more than half of the nation's fruits, vegetables and nuts from less than four percent of the nation's farmland.
Between the floods and the droughts, expect food cost to skyrocket! I can't wait till I'm in my new house...the first thing I'm doing is planting my garden. We're also going to plant some fruit trees.
This sounds like a plan!

Air Force One just now landed here. Bush will take a helicopter to view the flood damage, not just here, but in the state. My son's friend called this morning, and said they are condemning his home...which was 11 blocks from the river
I'm sorry about all the drought, also. I'll send good thoughts for rain.

My gosh, with all the screwed up weather, gas prices going up, grocery prices rising, this has got to be one of the worst years ever. It has been so hot and dry in Texas, I'm surprised we haven't had a ton of fires yet. I really feel for those on fixed incomes. How will they handle all the rising costs of things? I know several people down here who do not have a/c. I just can't understand how they make it. I'm trying to find a small window unit for a lady I know, but then I don't know if she would be able to pay the electricity.

Thanks Lori--I'll try. She is very proud and does not like to accept help. I paid for her water aerobics anonymously so she had to accept! LOL I'll check with another friend who lives near her to see what we can do to help.
