...Almost became a reality last Wednesday evening. Woke up around 10:30 to sirens, then a phone call from my son. Turns out we had a tornado heading our way. We got everyone in the basement before all hell broke loose.
The tornado came right through our neighborhood, fortunately no one was hurt and most of us still have our houses, but our once well shaded street is looking very bare. And we were the lucky ones. Other areas of town were totally destroyed.
Chapman, Kansas was hit even worse, with something like 80% of the town ruined.
Time to rebuild and reflect on how lucky we are to still be alive and well...and hope that all this screwed up weather in the midwest calms down!

Hurricanes are bad. And I lost most of my stuff in hurricane Rita in 2005. But, hurricanes can't sneak up on you. Tornadoes can! They scare me! So glad we don't have to deal with them here. The flooding in Iowa reminds me of 2005. Such a helpless feeling. I'm sure that's exactly what a lot of folks in your neighborhood are feeling, St Bacon. It has been an amazing spring up north.

It was pretty weird. I've lived here most of my life and I'm used to severe storms and tornadoes. This was the first one to hit Manhattan that did any real damage since 1966...which I also remember.
Our neighborhood was VERY lucky. It hit the west side of town first and was an F-4 storm at that point. It was down to an F-1 by the time it got to my 'hood and was actually about 20 - 30' in the air when it went overhead. We are fortunate that all of our large trees shielded the houses from much of the winds.
My Japanese garden is toast and my big oaks are either gone or badly damaged. BUT, we are alive, well and still have our home. Many in town lost everything. There isn't anything that was damaged which I can't rebuild, replace or replant.
The whole damn midwest is being assualted this year. Flooding, tornadoes, high winds. My good thoughts and well wishes go out to everyone who is being touched by this severe weather. It's not fun.

When is this horrible weather going to stop? I'm glad the Bacons were safe in the basement and not flying in the tornado. Tilly's house was also assaulted by a tornado.

Whoa. I'm so glad the worst of the storm skipped over your sty, but ~sigh~ I feel sad for the ones who lost everything...tornados and fire -- utterly destructive wherever they hit.

Yep glad the Bacons are doing well. I know what Luvvy means about no basement. No one in Texas has a basement. And those of us in mobile homes are especially vulnerable to wind and tornadoes. But if we can't even get storms down here with rain, I doubt we have to worry about tornadoes right now either.

Bacon...sorry for your troubles, but so relieved/happy that you and yours are fine.
My Japanese garden is toast and my big oaks are either gone or badly damaged. BUT, we are alive, well and still have our home. Many in town lost everything. There isn't anything that was damaged which I can't rebuild, replace or replant. Knowing how hard you've worked on this makes me sad for the loss of your hard work. What a great attitude!

Driving through the parts of town that had been hit hardest made it pretty easy to keep my own damage in perspective. Seeing a family sift through the pile of rubble that used to be their house is a very sad thing to witness. We were truly fortunate to only have severe damage to our yard. While cleaning up the yard I kept finding photographs from someone else's household. Strangers memories scattered all over the neighborhood. Pretty humbling to experience.
Thank you one and all for your well-wishes. I missed the MD crowd over the four days that I was gone...you guys are the best!
