We saw a sign like this on some way-way back road here in Nevada years ago -- figured it was some smartazz college kid working in the state road sign shop for the summer who was tired of painting "BUMP" 
(Since then, I understand California actually posts these signs now -- the one we saw was maybe 35 - 40 years ago, and I think it may have been the original inspiration)
