Controlling - your house!

Have you ever realized that your house has taken on a life of its own and that YOU are no longer in control of its space, place or pace?

As the opportunity for "spring cleaning" has just scooted past me, I am facing the challenge of re-organizing my living space for summer.

I am ready to do the household "purge" after years of household "binge-ing".

How do the most organized of you MDers start telling your house YOU are the boss?

I'm still trying to figure that one out, Madame. My living room and kitchen are not too bad. I'm going to have to get a backhoe in to clear out the bedroom!

Sweet...
My kitchen is relatively clean and clutter free. It is however, NOT organized! I really intend to clean out the bedroom and laundry room this summer. It's just a matter of getting myself energized to do it.

I am just organized enough to be in control but not so compulsive that my house can't breathe

My house rebels all the time. It gets messy and just won't clean itself up. I've tried grounding it but nothing seems to help. I've actually had to give up and clean it myself on rare occasions. I know I'm a spoiler but WTH.

I have my house undercontrol, I learned the easiest way for me was to eliminate things that I dont really need or things I dont use. And I go through the house on a weekly basis and get rid of atleast one garbage bag of things to either throw away, donate to a thrift store, or to give away to someone else. It works pretty well for me. Although I've moved alot in my lifetime and learned that its easier to just move with just the bare essentials now lol. -Ash

Ash is making a great point here. If you don't want your house to take on a life of it's own, then only purchase the things you really need to be inside of it...whether you move around or not.

Have a yard sale, give to Goodwill, churches, friends and family. Just keep your eye on what you're passing on to whom to avoid disasterous regifting.

Also, clean as you go along on a daily basis as it helps vastly in the long run.

After cleaning out my parent's homes at the end, I've realized that just because I like something doesn't mean I have to own it.
Go through one room at a time. take everything out that's not working, and then, let it go.

i can't control my room, let alone my house.

i have found...thanks to my friend jeanine....that bags and boxes are a good thing. i made a lot of room in my closet by stuffing prom dresses and old halloween costumes in bags and putting my barbies and old board games in boxes and putting them on shelves in my closet that weren't being used. also, throwing things out is good. i got rid of a lot of fat pants and a lot of stuff that i just wasn't using anymore. also, i don't like to throw out old diaries (i'm a sucker for nostalgia - i think that's evident by all the reminiscing i do about the "good old days" of the '90s), so i have them stored in a drawer so i can take them out whenever i want them.

though i still haven't grasped the concept of putting my clothes in the hamper and changing my bed on time, i hope to tackle this problem.

so yeah, basically...storage and sorting through things to find out what you want to throw out is good. it can work for a whole house, i guess.

Jalon's comment: ... "clean as you go along on a daily basis as it helps vastly in the long run."

reminded me of a tactic that DID work when I had all three children at home and things got "out of hand" (and usually on the floor) regularly.

We called it the "Five-minute Blitz"; everyone had to work fast and furious(ly) for only five minutes. It really DID make an amazing difference when everyone was feeling overwhelmed.

Like Ash, I have moved around a lot, so every time I move, its a clean out process!
The great thing about having friends come and help is, they rarely go home empty handed!
Get ready for that Hen Party ladies!!!

The community I live near has an annual rummage sale at the beginning of August. So I usually do some cleaning every summer to donate to the sale. It's just that the bedroom got really out of control this past year. I'm making small dents in it daily but a long way to go still!
