Oh, sure, leave it to the snobs in So Cali.

The Sierras get brushfires, but THEY've got to have an earthquake.

We're OK down here in Westminster, near the beach. The building really moved around and shook HARD, but no cracks in the walls or anything off the shelves. Katt was in the tub, and I was minding my own business here. (Quit snickering, TC!)

Katt jumped out of the tub and came out with soggy hair and in a towel (How can that woman manage to look SO good even in a disaster?) It was her biggest quake since she's been out here, and it was a doozy. Things are settling down, and we're just begining to hear from out of town relatives.

I just heard on the radio that the USGS has rated the quake as a 5.8

However, the Russian judges have only given it a "4"...

I posted this on the other thread I started....

I texted my bff in San Diego...said, "Just checking in...heard you had a bit of a quake."

She responded, "Yea we did dude it was AWESOME!"

So now you see why she's my bff Flippin FREAK!

Just saw what appears to be a water main break but they aren't saying where...minor street flooding. 10 aftershocks in the first 12 mins after the quake.

And Haban...NO SHIT! I'm jealous!! I haven't felt a good quake since I moved back to Cali 4 years ago! Hell, the last quake I felt was the BIG one, October 17, 1989....Loma Prieta!

Pal, you can wipe the smirk off your face... we weren't doing nuthin'.

EF, you missed Northridge and this one, lost of rocking & rolling, the apartment really SHOOK, and we're 24 miles away from the epicenter.

Katt was in the tub, and had just started washing her hair. she jumped out and was pretty shook up, but we're all OK now. (I'll never understand how this woman can look so GOOD, even in the middle of a disaster... I am such a lucky man! )

I saw that Caltech had downgraded it to 5.4 What did I say about those Russian judges?

BTW, we've had at least 24 aftershocks, with 2 at 3.8. What's even more interesting is that in the hour before the quake, there had been a cluster of little 1.3-1.5's all in the general area, and just to the east along the fault. I'm thinking there was some creep occuring along the faultline, and it hit an extra-tense spot and went off.

Loma Prieta was originally a 7.2

A few days later, they said it was a 7.1

I think now it's listed historically as a 7.0

Make up your effin mind! LOL

Yea, I missed Northridge...didn't feel it from up here I'm hoping we get a decent one soon...Ken and my girls have never felt one!

For awhile after I still thought the place was swaying too! Like I was in a boat or something. I figuired out it was me shaking.

I felt one up in Concord a couple of years ago, but nothing like this. We can't call out yet either.
I got a call from an Aunt that lives in San Clemente, she wanted to know if we were alright, and she was going to call my dad for me back in Michigan.

Lol, she lives a few roads up from the ocean there! Lol, I told her maybe she will end up owning some ocean front property!

She was also the one that told me years ago that she would rather have an Earthquake than Tornado's. I told her I agreed with her today too.

Habans brother and his wife and kids live in Diamond bar, where they are saying now that the epicenter was. Hoping they are ok.

Katt....if you don't have a dial tone, try picking up the phone and just holding it to your ear for a while. After Loma Prieta our phone service was messed up for over a full day....sometimes it would take up to 5 minutes to get the dial tone, but we DID get it if we waited. We got calls in but had trouble getting them out.

Hope you are ok down there. Do you have your earthquake supplies ready? With that size of a quake, I bet you're going to be able to really feel the aftershocks today.

In Cali, a 5.4 is considered pretty small (It's been officially downgraded, btw.)

I don't start stressing about a quake until it's at least a 6.0...I don't know about everybody else

Wow EF... a 5.4 is still a pretty good quake! We have what is called a "liquifaction" effect in large earthquakes here in WA since we are surrounded by so much water and the ground literally turns to jello.
I don't know if anyone remembers the quake that hit Kobe, Japan... but virtually the same effect happens in large quakes there too. We are due for such a quake and I can only hope I'm not anywhere near the viaduct when it hits.

I'm glad so many of you are OK and hope that you and your loved ones continue to be so...

This was a pretty hefty little shaker. It felt as if the walls were going to come apart if the shaking continued for another few seconds. This may be due to the type of soil we're on here; I've never felt a quake this close to the beach before.

Up in Concord, we were on alluvial soils from the Delta, so the ground motion wasn't as bad. Down here, we may be on sandstone.

No, Soli, it wasn't "Guitar Heroes"... Katt was trying some of the bellydancing moves you showed her, and I just lost it.

Tahome, My brother, mom, and his 3 oldest kids are in Mexico on a cruise, so they don't know about this yet. Both my sisters-in-law (one current, one former), are here without the 2 strong men they count on for heavy lifting.

I'm going to have an interesting week with the clean-up; my brother's wife and 3 little kids live in Diamond Bar, on what used to be a hillside. Film at 11....

Hope everyone is alright. Damn, that's some scary stuff! Never been in an earthquake before, but having the ground dance under you can not be a good thing. Prayers and good thoughts to those who are effected.
