This year has been a splendid year for walnuts and I have seven trees which will produce between five hundred and a thousand pounds of walnuts. I use to sell the walnuts to the state forestry department, but that program was a victim of budget cuts several years ago. It is way too much trouble to dry and crack the walnuts myself and the nearest company that buys walnuts is located in Missouri.
I suppose I could always feed the entire squirrel population of Illinois for a year, but I would rather give somebody else first crack at them.

Are there food banks in your area? Or gleaners? Seems as if some group nearby would be thrilled with this donation.

No thanks on the walnuts, I've got numerous black walnut trees at my place. I used to rake most of them up into a big pile and put a "Free" sign on it but couldn't even give them away. Of course this year, with the economy like it is, might be different.

If they are black walnuts -- oh how I wish I could make the drive!!!! Gas would cost a fortune. Or pay the postage -- probably cost a fortune to send.

Do you have any idea how expensive walnuts are? That does not surprise me. You have to strip the husks first and then crack the shells in order to extract the meat. It is very time-consuming unless you have specialized equipment and even then you have to factor in the cost of collecting and transporting the walnuts. That's one reason why the company in Missouri was not interested when I contacted them: It would cost too much for them to drive to northern Illinois and back.

Yeah, that is part of the problem. Black walnut trees are very common in this part of Illinois. I counted over 100 such trees just in my town alone.

We used to rake them into the driveway. Driving over them broke off the green husk. Then we would gather them up in crates and store them in the basement (fruit celler) and crack them as we wanted them. They freeze well also.
Nothing like black walnuts. Nothing like raking them Nothing like the green stained hands Ahhhhh..... memories.

The post office has two sizes of flat rate boxes. The last time I checked i think it was 4 dollars to anywhere in the country, but you could check to make sure, use the deeper of the two boxes. I'm not sure how many pounds you can get in a box, I guess you could fill it and see. Also make sure the post office doesn't have a max wieght limitation. Check into it and let us know. How much do you want for them?

How much do you want for them? Walnuts cannot be shipped through the post office unless the husks have been removed and the shells have been dried and even then special packaging is required. (That is also why I cannot sell walnuts via E-Bay.) That is obviously much more work than I care to do.
The walnuts are free to whoever will take them off of my hands. Be advised that the husks produce a brown juice that will dye whatever it comes into contact with as they decompose.

I was hoping they could come via mail.
How about UPS? or Fed Ex? BUT..... I'd want the green husk off - the driveway I tell ya - IF you have a gravel one that is.

When I was into basket-making several years ago, I decided to make one in the traditional way by dying the materials myself. I had a bucket of black walnuts steeping for months in a pail of water, it looked just like strong, black tea. The color wasn't exactly what I'd hoped for but it sure was fun trying to get the stain off my hands and nails for days.....

Sorry - I just have to go off topic just for a moment to say -- I really admire those who EVER made baskets. I was the only 3rd grader to flunk basket weaving. I absolutely hated it and refused to work on mine -- oh I think I may have gotten about a 3" base during the time the others were working their way up the sides.

LOL, CJPat! I took 8-week long classes for 4 summers in a row. Right now I'm looking at tobacco field baskets, egg baskets (aka "butt baskets"...because it looks like one), wine baskets, garden baskets, mail baskets, key baskets, flower baskets, you name it, I probably made one at least once. Someday, when I go to the rest home, I'll at least have a hobby.......lol.

people used to rub walnut husks on furniture to "stain" the wood before commercial stains were available.... and so the term "walnut stain" is where it really came from...
People I knew in Iowa used to leave the walnuts in the husks in the driveway and drive over them for a few months on the gravel to "dehusk" them
