I thought this was important for our friends in Canada...
Due to the frequency of human-bear encounters, the B.C. Fish and Wildlife Branch is advising hikers, hunters, fishermen and any persons that use the out of doors in a recreational or work related function to take extra precautions while in the field.
We advise the outdoorsman to wear little noisy bells on clothing so as to give advanced warning to any bears that might be close by so you don't take them by surprise.
We also advise anyone using the out-of-doors to carry "Pepper Spray" with him is case of an encounter with a bear.
Outdoorsmen should also be on the watch for fresh bear activity, and be able to tell the difference between black bear feces and grizzly bear feces. Black bear feces is smaller and contains lots of berries and squirrel fur. Grizzly bear shit has bells in it and smells like pepper.

Oh crimeny...I wish I'd had that "warning" when I was a Girl Scout. I tried to convince the local council (up in Alaska) how important and relevant to our location it would bave been to have a "Scat Badge"...seriously!
(Doggone leadership only laughed, which really P.O.'d me It's have served them right to have been eaten by a grizzley bear. )

You know that if you just stay in the bar, you don't have to worry about the bears.

Yep, the clientele who hang out in bars, whether they're sloppy old broads or grown men who've never matured, is pretty disgusting, isn't it.

Well, there is yet another bar type that you forgot Sunbabe. They are the good citizens of this country that save money for the future instead of spending it on beer. Those would be the thrifty boys that travel from bar to bar to go from table to table making sure not a drop of beer is wasted. They heroically polish off every bottle of backwash available. Seriously,I knew a fellow that did just that. It was a riot watching the guy stumble around lookin.

Ewww!
(Although I've been known to ask of someone -- someone I was with -- was going to eat their dessert -- and if not, could I please have it. I don't share spit with strangers, though )

One night my conductor was walking the train after we had a leak in the air brake system, I didn't hear anything from him for the longest time, I called him on the radio a couple times, the dispatcher couldn't get him either, so we were debating what to do... and he came in the back door of the locomotive...
A black bear had startled him, he dropped his radio and lantern, in his hurry to climb up on a railcar... every time he thought the bear was about to leave, someone would call him on the radio, and the bear would return to the radio...

Seen lots of damn bears when I was up north...almost walked smack right into some. They were always around the outpost health buildings because of the blood smell. I now have a very nice bearskin rug and a healthy respect for the damn things...
Oh, and LOL, I was going to reply that pepper spray doesn't do shit against a grizzly, but I see the initial post clarified that!

I have worked in the BC Rockies and lived in bear country all my life, then I moved here. BC's Bear Aware Program that is in place every year is a joke. And FYI....bear bells and bear spray are a waste of time and money. Be a responsible and aware hiker/camper and respect that the land belongs to the wild life not the humans. Do not leave garbage, tampons, pads etc along the trails. Do not store food or trash in or close to tents. Grizz poop piles are huge compared to black/brown bears....no worries....you will know the difference.
