Augh, he sure looks meaner than even Gustav or Hanna.
And it figgers...my neice just bought a 32' Nicholson sailboat, hasn't had a chance to get it surveyed and insured yet. And she and it are in the Keys.
I really don't know how much more of a beating Haiti and Cuba (and other smaller islands) can take, not to mention the fragile state of our own Gulf coast.
Plus, of course, MatchDoctor's servers and offices are in South Florida.
I may consider heading down to the Caribbean as a recovery volunteer. I got "side-tracked" from my plans when Grenada was devastated in 2004...who knows, maybe this year I can be useful to those who are far less fortunate, somehow.

Sunny, it would be great if you could do that!
Hanna passed thru here last night & throughout the morning. Lots of rain & stiff wind gusts, but all is well here. We did without power for about 3 hours, though...I'm afraid others may not have faired as well.
I had not seen the storm track for Ike, so thanks for posting that. I'll keep my fingers crossed for your niece!

I saw where hurricane trackers put winds at 148 mph, a cat 3. Hopefully it loses steam...

Our weather is so mild..I cant even imagine the terror of such storms and the devastation it leaves in it's path. My thoughts and prayers are with those who must face them...

I certainly hope that track doesn't stay that way, not that I wish any harm to anyone else. I already spent a good chunk of my rent money gettin' outta here last week, as did many others. We definitely don't need this right now.

That doesnt look good at all ! The path it is taking..When I lived in Northeast Al..Hurricane Ivan passed over still 70mph winds Then in west TN, Katrina went over still close to 70mph inland.
They spawn tornadoes inland..so you have to keep a eye out
We all know about the coastline..scary deal !!

It's up to a cat 4 again! (as of 8 minutes ago) And it's HUGE...and only moving 15mph! ~gulp~
Here's the FL Sun-Sentinal site with the tracking map.
http://weather.sun-sentinel.com/tropical/tracking/at200809.html
It keeps changing, which is why my other map zapped. This map doesn't quite seem to jibe with some others that show FL getting hit a little harder...but even if it stays mostly out to sea, the size of it is going to be widespread-devastating.
...and if it doesn't miraculously die, the Gulf Coast is going to be...let's just say "a lot worse off than it was last week". ~sigh~

Ike is going to be bad news, where ever it hits. Hopefully, it will lessen in intensity, before it makes landfall here. It looks as if it is going to pass over Cuba, which is bad for them, but it may lessen the intensity of the storm.
I also noticed that on several of the computer models, the have Ike headed straight for New Orleans. If it hits there as a cat 4 storm, it will be katrina all over again.

We got off lucky where I am as far as Hanna? I guess, is concerned. Some flooding and power outages but she was moving fast by the time she got here.
My thoughts and prayers are with anyone in the path of Ike.

from some of the news reports I have heard, Ike will probably stall when it hits the Gulf Waters and strengthen before it hits land.. Not Good.. My prayers are with all of you that live there..

My niece in Marathon, her friends, her employer (Dive shop/watersports owner-operator), and all the other employees have just spent the last two days "mega-lashing" all the boats and equipment (including her new sailboat ), making things are secure as possible. They're exhausted, but "things" had to be done "just in case", hoping that there will be something to salvage after the storm. And contrary to what they normally do -- spend their time having a great hurricane party -- they are all evacuating the key this afternoon, heading north.
The Turks and Caicos have already been devistated with 80% of the houses being damaged or destroyed and secured boats being washed away, Great Inagua in the Bahamas suffered a direct hit, and Ike continues along at 13 mph (slow hurricanes are bad, even worse when they stall).
My heart really breaks for Haiti, though. They simply don't have the resources and infrastructure to rescue and shelter their people...one of the most poverty stricken areas in this hemisphere. Their half of the island of Hispanola is essentially denuded because they've cut down most of the trees for firewood (a 180 degree contrast to the Dominican Republic half), resulting in mud-mud-mud, horrendous erosion problems and destructive mudslides when it rains. The ground's so saturated from the last two storms that the entire country is even more of a hell-on-earth than it was before. I don't know what they're ever going to do to feed and shelter their people...and to eventually restore their fragile economy. (It's no wonder so many of their people will try anything -- like 100 people in a rickety 30' boat -- to try and reach another country).
Cuba's going to get splattered once again, too. While it, too, is a country of poverty (especially compared to our standards), as strange as it seems, the one good thing offered by their Marxist regime is that they are fairly well organized when it comes to saving lives during these storms (from what I've gathered -- Haban may know the "real facts" through his relatives who are still there...and hopefully have managed to stay safe). But Cuba, too, has a fragile economy and this recent hit -- 3rd in a month -- may be overwhelming ~sigh~
I'm not even going to touch on the effect it may have on our own Gulf States -- we've seen some of it after Katrina. Who can ever forget?...the only good thing I can see is that at least people have an opportunity to hit the road and head out of the hurricane's way even if they have to leave their homes and posessions behind (easier said than done, I know, but unlike an island, there's at least somewhere to run to even if they have to hitch-hike)...
When I moan and groan about the heat and the cold, the wind that keeps blowing my fence down and the lack of rain out here, all I have to do is think of these people...and the price they must pay to live in a tropical paradise ~sigh~

We need to keep a close eye on Ike. After hitting land, then heading out to the ocean again, hurricanes usually increase in force. We sure don't need another one like Katrina but guess we'll have to watch and see what happens. The only good part of the situation is that the evacuation procedures have improved as have the help immediately after.

Just like Gov. Crist of FL said, "Hurricanes follow no rules", prayers and well wishes are being sent to all in front of her path.

Lets hope it really loses strength coming across land! I feel bad for the people in Cuba and the out laying islands too.

We'll keep Haban's relatives in our thoughts and prays as Ike tracks through Cuba. Then after that who knows?

I've been following the hurricanes too these past couple of weeks. I'm always impressed with the power of nature, and then grateful for the relative safety of where I live. We may have earthquakes in our furture, but that type of gisaster tends to be spaced out, as opposed to the cyclic, yearly patterns of tornados and hurricanes. Somehow, for me, that makes it easier to tolerate. The anticipation and watching the progression would drive me nuts (or more so).
My thoughts are out there for those in it's path.
And Sunny, if you go do volunteer work, I'll feed the cat you don't have.

I just checked out the forecast map. It looks like Texas is in for a beating. My best wishes to those in the path of this storm. It is down to a category I storm now and I hope that it won't strengthen too much, before making landfall again.
