Last year when I was still in Portugal, my father and I were driving out to dinner, when I saw a dog laying in the middle of the road. My father was going to continue driving, but I asked him to stop. "He's dead.. come on let's go!" he said.. anxious to get to dinner. He stopped anyway and I waved my hand to oncoming traffic so I could approach the dog. The dog was still very much alive, altho laying very still and extremely traumatised. Dad and I picked him up and put him in the back of our truck and we drove him to a nearby vet. The vet said he had multiple injuries and had quite likely been hit more than once. For the sake of any more suffereing, the vet put the golden lab mix to sleep.
Dad and I then went home, washed, and went back out to dinner knowing we had done a good thing for a dog that may have taken a few more blows and taken a long time to die in agony.
Would you stop for a dog if you could?

And the sad thing is, dogs often lay still when they are traumatised, so often looking like they are dead when in fact they are not.

Sad story, I'm glad to see you did the right thing though.
I not only stop for injured animals, I'll stop for what looks like a lost dog and will put it in the car and try to find it's home.
Please people take the time and be a hero, you could be the difference between life and death for a loving animal in need of your help.

How sad. You did the right thing by stopping and at least trying to help him. I will even stop and take a slow walking turtle off the road if he is in danger.

Any animal I will help - I found a black lab once. Ran an ad in the paper for her, decided that if no one would claim her I would find another home for her - well no one ever even called about her - it took me 16 years and I still couldn't find that perfect home for her!
A PET'S TEN COMMANDMENTS.........
1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful. 2. Give me time to understand what you want of me. 3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being. 4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you. 5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me. 6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it. 7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you. 8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak. 9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old. 10. On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so.

Yep, believe it or not, I've stopped for injured or dead dogs (and cats) in the road -- and I'm not well-known for even being a dog lover...but I know the pet is usually someone else's best friend. When I've been too scared to handle an injured canine, I at least block traffic until someone who knows what they're doing comes on the scene.
I've often pulled (or pushed ) dead critters to the side of the road so that they won't get run over any more and called animal control (or ~ahem~ the public works department when there's no hope )

I just rescued a baby tortoise-shell colored kitten from across the highway in the grove of pine trees across from my house...i almost ended up road kill. But baby kitty is fine, fed, and happily in my bed as I type. And i had to take a tylenol migraine because every time i would call it, it would wait to start coming toward me when a car was coming...alot of close calls for us both...whew :)

That reminds me, my mailman just recently ran over the large wild tortoise living in my yard and he never stopped his truck. It cracked his shell and broke his right back leg. I brought him to the vet, then the vet said they had no one of staff to treat him but recommended a rehab across the county in Springhill. Now he is in good hands at the rehab.

Car in front of me hit a dog a few years back. Big black lab...poor baby flew up in the air...onto the pavement, and in shock, got up and ran off into the woods. It was heartbreaking to not find him.
