I am trying to think up a home based business. I figure, I could do alot if I owned a van or truck. I have an idea to clean out junk from people's attics/garages, basements and haul it away for them. I know alot of people don't like dealing with junk. It could be quite lucrative, just need to come up with a monetary figure of what to charge for the service, then trade my car in for a van. I know you can get the larger vans now pretty cheap because of the gas increases.
What have you been doing to get by if you lost your job? How are you surviving?

to be honest, my brother has a place that is paid for. i take care of half of the place for my "room and board". being a man of honor this is beneath me but being a man of honor little is left but grabing my ankles for the rich man. perhaps you might consider making some real friends? we be jammin

My rent is pretty cheap and I don't require much in the way of food... so unemployment is keeping me going for now. It doesn't cover much in the way of recreation, but then again, having fun doesn't require money... just a sense of creativity and a fun loving partner I'll be looking in to schooling and grants starting next week... I would really love to start a landscaping business with my beau and if I can qualify for a grant, it would be all the money we would need to get started... I can get the contractors license and he could run the crew

I refer to it as 'semi-retired'
After over two years with no steady employment (which began by choice), I'm learning to cut back in all areas, simplify---it's a game to see how many weeks a tank of gas can last. My record is seven weeks. 'How low can she go?' is not just for the limbo dance.

Just an idea, but instead of trading in your car and taking on more debt, why not look at things you can do with your car?
Think about cleaning houses, very little startup cash needed. Just cleaning supplies and some advertising.
Or maybe delivering pizzas? Some of those delivery drivers are netting $15 an hour.
Newspaper delivery.
Dog/cat sitting, House sitting.
Running errands for people.
Be flexible and see what's needed in your area.

Robbing gas staions and liquor stores is fairly lucrative, the hours are good too.

And free cable tv, and a workout room and showers, and lots of social interaction with peers.

Thank goodness I still have a job, although each year it gets harder and harder to do. The kids are younger and younger and I'm older and older. I look and do fine in the morning but by the time I get home I can hardly walk at all. But I'll hang on until I can't do it at all.
Lune I agree with Touch about the cleaning jobs--that way you can hang on to your car. My sister used to do house cleaning and wedding/party planning on the side for extra income.

When I separated from my x husband, I was working full-time in a doctor's office and had weekends off. On weekends, I would clean houses for the rich biotches in the la-dee-da part of the county for $15/hr and that was 11 years ago. Probably, the average pay is more than that now. It's good money, and usually they pay cash.

Thanx everyone for your input, my bf and I have decided to start our own cleaning business, we are just now trying to decide whether we want to do residential or commercial. I think it could be quite lucrative. He has an suv so we can haul everything in that. We could also do some residential too so I think this is the way to go. Thanx for the great suggestions!

Cleaning homes is a good job.. it's slow starting out I cleaned the home of president of the company I used to work for.. I was doing pretty good til I hurt my back and couldn't climb the stairs without excruciating pain.. there were 3 levels and a total of 48 stairs there.. lugging that vaccuum was hard.. Cleaning for businesses.. the hours are usually pretty late..
I have a client now that I clean for, just not on a regular basis ( Kates Aunt Linda)..

I will keep everyone informed once we start the business, at the moment I am looking for a full time job and I'd like to do the cleaning business on the side like on the weekends. I know it will take awhile to get off the ground and we will need money to live on in the meantime.
