Now that we have established that your mind is firmly in the gutter, I am sorry to disappoint you by informing you that this is not a thread about sex.
I was actually wondering if I am the only person who feels compelled to salvage screws, nuts, bolts and other useful hardware from broken equipment. If I own something that cannot be repaired, I will disassemble it in order to salvage screws and nuts that I can use in other projects. If one my neighbors throws out a television or a clock, odds are that I will be dismantling it within a day or two to salvage useful parts. It is probably genetic: My father was always doing the same thing.
Am I the only one who does this or do we have enough people here to form our own "Nuts and Screws" club?

I have a friend who is the same way! He will strip anything down for the parts that he cannot repair. My father and brother were the same way. If it was unrepairable, they would take it (whatever it was) apart and save the bits, and nuts and bolts. You never know when you might need one just that size!

Do you throw them all into a communal box, or do you seperate them by diameter, thread pitch, standard/metric, etc?

I do this once in a while but it depends on the item, the time invested in disasembling and the value of the parts.
The idea for me is to recycle parts that I could use in other projects so I don't have to purchase them.
To LJ, a communal screw and bolt box.

Men are NOT the only ones suffers from this affliction. I can NOT throw any ANY thing that I might find useful. If I do, within a few months, I'll be kicking myself in the butt for getting rid of it as it never fails...I will need what I have disgarded.

I don't save everything, but I always do a quick scan and consider if I might need any spare parts.

I'd like to know where the errant screws and bolts that are occasionally found come from? We never find anything broken, and never actually see it fall off of or out of anything. It just appears. And so, the obligatory "save'' , and the tossing out a week or so later when everything appears to be holding together okay.

What's worrisome is if you put something together and have a bag of "important looking stuff" left over.

My late father was a thrifty German (who lived thru the Great Depression days) and saved everything he ever thought he might be able to use again someday! When we were cleaning out my late parents home last month, in the garage were jars and jars of separated different sized screws, bolts, nails, etc. My son and son-in-law took what they wanted and I kept the rest. I guess I inherited his way of thinking too because I have many, many old babyfood jars that are filled with the same kind of stuff. And here I thought I was more like my Irish mum........

Yes, I salvage. I also sort, but not precisely (i.e. - similar-sized screws are together, similar-sized bolts, small buttons with small buttons, etc.). I have an assortment of multi-compartment storage boxes, which allows me to be sufficiently organized so as to find the needed item without wasting too much time.

Now that we have established that your mind is firmly in the gutter, I am sorry to disappoint you by informing you that this is not a thread about sex The first thing that came to my mind was Home Depot
I frequently do electrician work and and that means the most common thread sizes are 6-32, 8-32, and 10-32. I can spot them easily when sorting through my tool buckets, bags, and boxes. I don't keep them organized because after years of use it has become instinctive-like to spot them. Some screws I keep separate though like screws for molly bolts and special purpose screws, they stay in boxes.
If I see a gem (meaning a tool or piece of hardware) in the parking lot or on the roadway I will pick it up and put it in my tool box for a future job. I'm sure that some guys on MD have found a bungie cord and placed it in their tool box.
I suppose I qualify to join this club. I can certainly supply tips and stories of my experiences.

I tend to save potentially useful salvage items too, but I balance it against the cost of the items if I have to buy them and how much room they take up in my dwelling as well as the likelihood of my ever actually needing the items. For the most part, nuts and bolts and screws are such a small expenditure if you need to buy them, that they are really not worth the space they take up in your toolshed.

I'm sure that some guys on MD have found a bungie cord and placed it in their tool box. too funny... Donald almost put me thru' the windshield the other day driving up our road.... he spotted a bungee cord ( the eyes of a hawk) laying in the road
His motto is " Hell, I ain't proud"
