I just heard about this on TV this morning. Here is the article.
90-Year-Old Woman Shoots Herself Inside Foreclosed Ohio Home
Friday, October 03, 2008
A 90-year-old woman shot herself inside a foreclosed home authorities in Ohio were trying to evict her from.
Addie Polk was found in her Akron house, bleeding with a gunshot wound, by a neighor after three Summit County Sheriff's deputies arrived to serve a foreclosure eviction notice, MyFOXCleveland.com reported.
It wasn't immediately clear whether Polk was trying to commit suicide or shot herself accidentally. She was found bleeding in her second-floor bedroom. A handgun was nearby.
Deputies knocked on Polk's front door at about 1 p.m. Wednesday and got no answer, according to MyFOXCleveland.com. They were about to leave when the heard noises coming from upstairs.
A neighbor told the officers he thought Polk was home. He climbed up a ladder through a second-floor bathroom window because he was worried about her, according to MyFOXCleveland.com. That's when he found Polk.
The neighbor ran downstairs to tell the deputies about the wounded woman and let them inside, according to the Summit County Sheriff's Department. Polk was taken to Akron General Medical Center, where she was treated and admitted, MyFOXCleveland.com reported.
The Akron Police Department is investigating.

That's terrible and if the government doesn't do something it will get even worse!

Countrywide is forgiving the mortgage, but still...she was in her late 80's when she took out a 30 year mortgage for about 65K I think it was, plus an equity line of credit. How on earth did she expect to pay that back? Why on earth did they give it to her? I think she's still in critical condition and I feel awful for her, but the whole thing smells to high heaven to me.

Alot of mortgages were granted people of lower incomes, I think it was corporate greed. It's just so sad, a woman of 90 being thrown out of her house. Plus now in the hospital fighting for her life, I hope she survives but now what, where does she go from here? She will still need a place to live..

As I posted above, Countrywide forgave her mortgage so her house is free and clear...of course then she'll have the hospital bill...

A former neighbor of mine during the couple of years I was living in FL, had a similar situation. She took out a second mortgage when she was in her late 70's because she needed some repairs done on her house. When I met her, she was 81. She really struggled to pay her payment and bills out of her small SS check. I know she would go without food sometimes, so I'd go shopping for her and tell her, "Happy Birthday" or "Merry Christmas" or whatever else would pop into my mind. When I was here in NC for the summer last year, she had put her house up for sale and it sold quickly. She told my neighbor as she was leaving for the assisted living home (she had no family left), "Well, I've at least got enough money to live 3 more years."
How sad, how very sad, we have come to this.

When my mom was in her late 60s she had to take out a loan to fix up her house to state standards before she could sell it. Luckily she sold it within 2 weeks and paid back the loan through the proceeds of the sale. She sold her house for $90,000 and bought a mobile home down here in Texas for $34,000. After she passed away the mobile came to me. But it's sad when older people have to take out large loans or mortgages to fix up homes they've had forever. Also sad when they have to move out and have no money for more than a few years in assissted living. How can one fight depression with things like that hovering over you?
