Many of us are having to cut back on our spending due to the ecomony. What are you doing to save money?

I've cut my cable off...I don't watch TV anyway. I'm saving over 75.00 dollars there. I also cut my phone bill in half by getting rid of my "metro" line...which I can't call into San Antonio without paying toll cost. Rarely call San Antonio anyway. I have cell phone that I can use to make those calls.

We are going to use space heaters instead of the central heat this winter...just heat where we need it.

I thought about that but I need it to receive internet. Wireless is still more expensive than having a home phone and internet. Who knows? If the ecomony gets any worse. I'll cut internet too.

No I'm not that bad off. I just want to keep it that way.

Cut out Starbucks.

Install a programmable thermostat if you haven't already! I heat and/or cool only during hours that I am actually at home, otherwise the a/c runs at 82 degrees and the heat runs at 60 degrees!

Shop at Aldi or other discount grocer in your area. A lot of their products are just as good if not better than the national brands!

Last resort: hook on the side. Sometimes you just can't cut out Starbucks.

I don't do Starbucks. I grind my own beans and my coffee blows Starbucks outta the water. Already brown bag it to work...been doing that for years.

I'm using space heaters...dont need a thermostat for that. My cental unit has a programable thermostat that I still after 3 years haven't been able to find out.

Wish we had Aldi's but I do go to Sam's Club and stock up. I check for the local sales at the grocery store and plan meals around them. Don't forget that beans are an inexpensive source of protein and can be cooked in a crock pot!

Don't forget to caulk around your windows and doors. Get new weatherstripping anda new door sweeps while you are at it.

Pssssssst with all those beans.....are we sure we want our windows air tight.

I buy food in bulk and use coupons....We have a wholesale outlet for groceries. I used to buy half a cow.....Split the cost with friends...much cheaper than your grocery store prices...

The outlets in your home let alot of cold air in....You can buy felt backings to put on before the outlets are attached and its amazing how the draft goes away...

If you have a fireplace, when not in use..close the draft.

Close the doors inside your house.....the heat stays in them better....if you hang a drape between rooms your heat will stay in the room better..

I'm not too good at cutting back, things are expensive where I live, and I too don't like to cut back on the Starbucks...BUT doing the sniff test on clothes is a good indicator when its time to wash laundry...that is always a good money saver

I put those in last year...they do help...but you only need to put them on your outside wall outlets.

I'd like a clothes line for outside. They are so difficult to find locally though. Too expensive to order on the net and delivered.

If you like to rent DVD's, don't forget you can check them out at the library!

i dont do starbucks.. when i replaced my old central air and heat unit ( it was over 30 plus years old) i invested 4500 in a new trane unit and my gas and electric is 1/3 of what it was and the new unit is paying for itself.. and its nice to have my hubby to curl up with too.. Sweet N Louisiana

Whatagal.......I just tossed a rope outside and tied from tree to tree. Another good idea is the wooden clothes hanger thingies....they are collapsible....I have a couple in my backyard also.....

I also rent DVDs from the library......I just found out you could a month ago.

Recycle...at least here they charge for extra garbage cans...
Make a grocery list...it will save you on impulse buying
Plastic your windows if you live in a cold winter state

I heard this one on tv yesterday .... pay cash for everything and stop using your debit card. If you only have $20 on you when you go to the grocery "for a few things" you'll stay within that budget. If you use your debit card, you are liable to pick up more things and spend twice as much.

Whatagal, consider zoning the heat from your primary furnace instead of space heaters. They are notorious fire hazzards and cost 3 times as much per BTU to opperate.

That works for me!

I just tossed a rope outside and tied from tree to tree
My luck I'd hang myself on it by accident!

My central unit isn't working anyway. Right now, the extra money to get a new one (as the old one is ancient) and the money I've been saving, it's been a blessing in disguise. Maybe you could come up with another alternative for me! (I do have a fireplace but it doesn't heat the whole house...especially my bathroom and bedroom)
