Nope, not Omar the Tentmaker or his buds -- a different big bag of wind.
I've been talking with friends in the Virgin Islands (St. Croix) and they're all hunkering down planning on being slammed tonight by 100 mph winds from Hurricane Omar, who's sneaking up from the wrong side -- from the West, not the (normal) East.
Roads are already flooded and they're expecting up to 20" of rain ( ). It's a compact hurricane, so far, (only 15 miles across in the worst part), but the islands aren't that wide so they'll get the full impact no matter where it hits.
Joe and Dianne are taking as much stuff as possible off their liveaboard boat in Christiansted Harbor, as are the rest of the sailors who live there...but many are seasonal residents, so those people are home -- stateside -- unable to do much more than pray and keep their fingers crossed (like my friend, Cap'nLarry with his 42' Beneteau which is secure by mega ground tackle, but his neighbors boats might not be ~gulp~).
Tina cleaned off her balcony and is planning on sleeping through it (as she always does) -- she says there's no point in arguing with Mother Nature.
Even though this is only supposed to be a Cat 2, when there's so much rain and then it comes from a reverse direction, it's hard to plan for predictive results.
St. Croix was just renistated as a cruise ship port of call this season after much "political" squabble and abandonment and years of struggling tourism trade and the resulting depression in the economy. And now this! ...then again, St. Thomas Harbor (the "competition") won't be out of danger either.
This one may affect people in the south and east coast of the United States in a way they'd never thought about: HOVENSA, the second largest oil refinery in the Western hemisphere (located on the south shore of St. Croix), shut their operations down already...Hess stations and a lot of independents may be facing a temporary shortage and some heating oil suppliers may be affected.
But the one positive thing is that people's water cisterns will be filled to the brim. At 25-30 cents per flush with delivered water, island residents can you-know-what to their hearts content for a bit. And when spending hurricane-time -- at night time -- on an island, there's sure to be a lot of you-know-whating going on.

Well since it's "traditional" -- and ecologically and financially sound -- not to flush for "tinkle" on a cistern-dependent island, there's only one other thing that'd be going into that loo...and it ends with "2".

LOL, from what a few of my friends said, they ran to the loo a few times while their houses echoed with the shudders and racket Omar caused. When you're in a boarded up house, you have no idea what's going on outside. I've been on the phone with friends during one hurricane and even I got a bellyache from the background noise and tension...from thousands of miles away -- nothing can quite describe the constant flinching for hours on end (maybe sort of like being under combat seige).
Anyway, most of my friends are just doing cleanup this week...the ground was saturated from a "good season" of rain (very welcome because they'd had a summertime drought), then 20" or so of rani fell along with Omar's hurricane: little trees and big ones splatted all over St. Croix. They say it truly looks like a war zone (and the chainsaw guys are gonna make a royal fortune -- par for the course )
My friend's Benneteau made it through just fine (as far as he knows -- no one's been aboard), but poor Bob from Stixx boat (his pampered baby "Love Inn" that he's had for years and years ) didn't fare so well along with another 30-50 boats that were sink. (Many of which were people's homes!)
I'm reall sick about the boat I ALMOST bought a few years back...this is the "before":

And this is "Helios" now, smushed alongside "Love Inn":

~groan~ That breaks my heart. ...and other boats sunk or smashed, including most of the bluewater charter fishing fleet as well as the excursion boats, both piwer and a sailing cat:

Now THESE guys were REALLY lucky...but will be facing an interesting logistics problem trying to get them back in deep water again:

What's not seen is that the channel is so littered with sunken boats and debris that it's completely closed for now...and this is only a tiny glompse at the damage to the boating community in St. Croix ~sigh~ (Half he boats moored at the yacht club were apparently wiped out).
Surprisingly, there was very little structual damage on island, but since most of the island had to rebuild after Hurricane Hugo in '89 and Marilyn in '95, most people's houses and businesses are somewhat "hurricane resistant" now...and people there have learned to really prepare (except for some of the boaters who didn't consider a "backwards" hurricane hit, apparently )
But as a friend of a friend said in a forwarded email, "And within days the gorgeous sea calms and the sun comes out and the birds sing and we are again living in paradise."
~grin~ It takes a special spirit to survive on a tropical Caribbean island for any length of time...lol, I love that attitude and I still haven't given up hope that I can rejoin those folks once again...someday soon.

I haven't been on any tropical Islands since the early 80's, but it always was a fun place...

I had a very brief moment of hope that she might make an appearance at the upcoming Vegas Get-Together But, alas....hopes have been dashed!
This is no longer the *Omar* thread.
It is now OFICIALLY the SunBabe thread!!!!!
