at what point in society did it become acceptable and/or tolerable for people to 1.) slur their words as part of their normal speech, 2.) create new words 3.) create new spellings for current words??
I thought about this after i saw a posting of Kaos's. YOU make me throw my hands in the ayer, a-yer, ayer, a-ayer . At first i was like what the hell is 'ayer'?? What ever happened to spelling it AIR??
I was standing in between two people in blockbuster the other day. They were conversing from each side of me. out of 2 minutes of standing in the same spot, i understood "girl, whatyouwanna watch baby mama fo" and the rest was history, absolutely positively no clue what was said, it was like they were speaking a foreign language.
Does anyone know when or how ebonics got started??
On to the 'text talk' as i call it. Why do people continue to portray them selves as idiots when using text talk in other forms besides texting? I get it, some use the number 4 in place of for, to keep your thumbs from falling off. But when this carries over into homework, emails, RESUMES and APPLICATIONS...do people consider or even care what kind of impression they give people?? I had a patient who wrote on her triage paper as to why she needed to be seen "bc i pass out 4 4 hours" this was not a teenager! This woman was in her 30s.

damn, I wasn't even going to post today, but....
to look at Ebonics you will have to step back into the days of slavery. in order for man to evolve there must be a stimulus present that shows the way. for them not to mature you must not give them access to information, mostly written. so was the way of the slave owners. teach them nothing, keep them stupid and you will always have your way. the smart ones you kill by turning the whole against him or her. a fool will always be a fool because a fool is dependent. they are the ones you use to keep the timid at bay and bring down the strong.
now add language into it. the most you would want a slave to do is to learn the bare minimum. just enough to communicate your wishes, but not enough to continue further.some how and at some point that process was infected. somewhere someone taught a slave to read, possibly because he/she showed promise, aka "the house nigger." so, you give them the bible and tell them that all in the bible were white. this is the birth of the black american culture, why so many are christian God fearing individuals, and why other blacks across the world frown on their american counter parts.
but...
as time has progressed, wars fought, and learning advanced a change has occurred. as more and more blacks attend college to learn what was not offered before, the american holds of racism try to tighten the reigns on such measures. originally you could throw as many blacks in jail as you want. problem became that a bored blackman WILL turn to education and other religions, new ways of thinking. too many were coming out with bachelors, masters, or PHD's ...accredited. that has since been stopped.
progress further....
destruction of the norm is the primary way to build a culture. all Ebonics is, is the massacring of the american english language to prove a point. that is a lie. Ebonics is the basis of american black stupidity based in the times when they were not allowed to learn. have we progressed since them? yes, but just like you have unions there to protect the stupid, you have Ebonics there to continue the malarkey. why act educated if you can get away with it by seeming stupid? look at it this way... when a mexican says to you in YOUR country "No speako de englis!" What do you do other than go out and learn to communicate? That is all Ebonics is, another way to force someone to communicate outside their adjusted norm.
Now you mention lyrics of a song that KAOS likes. She is not the only one. That song was originally posted by Sweetheart83446 in the Music thread. What's going on you say? Change! Music is universal and out of the aspects of the past (Ebonics) a culture has formed that protects those who are true to the cause and reality of it's life. It's called Hip Hop. Women like KAOS and Sweetheart can Speak the language because they have embraced the culture. That culture is not about being Black or White as it's roots once were, it's now about those who understand the struggle, have some amount of soul in them, and is not AFRAID to learn how to communicate.
"I hate rap" - That is because the person does not understand that struggle or the people. They DON'T speak the language.
"I hate country" - Again, no understanding of the people or lifestyle.
but....
such is life when everyone is retarded (loose meaning of the word)

Sigh...it's the same argument. I don't give a crap what someone talks like. As long as there's a MIND behind those words.
Now granted, when my father would teach, he'd grade down for papers that were written in the colliquial (no I don't know if that's spelled correctly) language, aka Hick.
Speak whatever you like. Learn the language you are attempting to master. Learn when it is appropriate to use the language you're using. Personally, I swear like a sailor and I know it. Do I talk like that in a professional setting? Absolutely not. But out and about? LOL yeah, and I might even be swearing in the grocery aisle next to you. So which would be more offensive...the use of ebonics? or hearing, "Lord you're out of your F***ing mind!*

Well, I guess I will get the hate mail too, as I agree with a great deal of what you wrote. The dumbing down of our society, continues unabated it seems. When our nation was founded, at a minimum, an educated man spoke at least three languages fluently. Now, it is difficult to someone, who is capable of writing a coherent sentence, in their native language.
Over the last 200 years, we have made tremendous strides in the fields of science and technology, yet where are our contributions in the arts, in literature, in plilosophy? In parts of our nation, our education system even treat ebonics as an acceptable dialect of the English language. People wonder why they can not get a good job, when they are incapable of writing or conversing, with proper grammar. Then again, society also needs people to work at McDonalds. After all, almost anyone can be taught to ask, "would you like fries with that?"

I agree that as a whole, we are not as educated as our European or Canadian friends in the area of languages. However...it should be noted that our founding fathers WERE european! As a whole, it was necessary to know different languages in order to arrange trade agreements. As this particular nation got bigger, we stuck with the main language of english, and yet had many different dialects that sprang up. If you go to the hills of the Appalachians, it is a prime example of what I speak. I'm not so certain that people are getting dumber and ebonics is an example of it. .

unlike Europe, America only borders two other countries. where it would be prevalent to speak 8 to 10 languages, as in Europe, English was always the mainstay here to the point that moronicies (not a real word, yet) set in.

I personally can't figure out why phone text is necessary...it takes less effort to speak/leave a message.
It was bad enough that kids were on cells talking while driving....now they TEXT while they drive
