"Beauty attracts admiration and demands a pedestal; cuteness attracts affection and demands a lap."
(Natalie Angier, "The Cute Factor", NY Times 1/3/06)
This was a great article, btw, but what are your thoughts on the difference between beautiful and cute in the opposite sex? Do you prefer being called one versus the other?

If beauty demands a pedestal then beauty is starving for attention. I'll take cute because my lap is more sensitive than some inanimate pedestal.
Please don't call me either.

Cosmo said in order to be considered beautiful a woman has to be at least 5' 7". Other wise we are just considered cute. So, there for, I am cute!!!!

I don't fit in the beautiful category, but I have lately been called a cutie.
What about pretty? Can't we have a 'pretty' category too? I sure hope so, because there are definitely some days when I feel pretty.

I've been called alot of THINGS and cute and .........well, perhaps this is off topic..........nevermind. Is this really a thread? I mean I see the point, but, what a STUPID quote by Angier. Shouldn't surprise me.

On topic, I don't really like being called cute. It makes me feel a little condescended to...

As long as I'm not called ugly it doesn't matter.....
Hey....why does Cosmo say that anyway? Just because all of those models are over 5' 7? A lot of(not all) those models in Cosmo look like cross dressers....and are not beautiful.

I simply found it amusing, Waiting. It wasn't meant to be profound but it was pithy in context of the article. Alone, it's merely fodder for (hopefully) interesting discussion.
But, to each their own.

Does that make me REALLY cute since I'm only 5'2"?
According to Mr. Webster:
cute
1 a : clever or shrewd often in an underhanded manner b : IMPERTINENT, SMART-ALECKY "don't get cute with me"
2 : attractive or pretty especially in a dainty or delicate way
3 : obviously straining for effect
Classy....skip #'s 1 & 3. Pay close attention to #2!

"Pretty Woman" comes to mind!
I've always wondered why some women didn't like to be called cute. But to me, the same person can be "cute" or "beautiful". It all depends how she is dressed, acts, hairstyle, attitude, the situation, etc.
"Cute" is more simple, playful, silly and sweet. Beautiful is more sophisticated, serious and sexy. Both are always meant as a compliment and a woman who can be both and appreciate it is more attractive overall!
EyesofBlue posted before I finished. I'm glad I noticed before posting because I also see #2 as fitting for "cute"..
"2 : attractive or pretty especially in a dainty or delicate way"
But "attractive or pretty" also applies to "beautiful", just in a different, but still, complimentary way.

You mean I'm all three? Checkmate--you've just scored some points here.
Danae,
I used to go around singing all of those West Side Story songs, when the movie first came out. I pretended I was Maria. Like I even looked anything like her.
