The other day a engineer was pulling some ranks to a construction worker and saying something like:
"...in all this time you just open half a hole..."
My reaction was emidiate and i started laughing on how dumb that statement was, specialy from someone with higher degree that spent thousands of hours with phylosophy classes (yes in portugal we are forced to have that horrible discipline).
Now the question here is not if the hole was big enough or not, but the simple fact it is impossible to open half hole, and a educated person like a engineer should never come up with such statements.
So my friends your opinion ... is it really possible to just open half a hole?
my opinion is simple, no matter how much you have to dig or how wide, in the minute the shovel hits the ground no mater if it takes a foot of dirt or just a simple inch, the hole is already there.

Technically, you are right. Once you start digging you have a hole, no matter the size so it is impossible to go half hole. The only exception is if all involved in the digging knows the dimensions on the blueprint. Half hole on the blueprint now takes precedence. Still, even so, you have depth, height, width, and circumference to deal with in finding this evasive half hole....

What if you were drilling through a piece of wood or metal, but only went half way through?  Its not really a hole if it doesnt go all the way through, its more like an indentation.

it is still a hole , tho' that doesnt mean you can actualy fit anything in there
