I have absolutely no clue how to cook a turkey. I usually have a turkey t.v. dinner for Thanksgiving if I'm by myself. However this week I'm going to have my 2nd graders write about this in their journals. When I do, I will share what they say. Y'all can let me know if they're close or not!
Anyone who has some good ideas on this, real ways to cook a turkey, please add to the thread.

first, make sure you remove the pack with the gizzards, heart and liver fron inside the bird.. I use that for my gravy.. if you are a novice at turkey baking, just go get one of those large baking bags to put it in.. stuff an onion up it's butt, close the bag tightly and bake according to the size of the turkey.. it takes a few hours.. the bag and the onion keep it moist while it bakes.. when it's done, take it out of the bag and let it brown up a little more if you like a crispier skin..( use the juice from your baked turkey to make the gravy.. just dice up the gizzard, liver and heart into the juice and simmer.. don't give the kitties the neck bones tho..
My uncle Kerm bakes his turkey upside down so that all the juices run to the breast meat to keep it moist.. it works..

Thanks, Daisy--it doesn't sound so hard. Luckily this year I won't even have to try. I've been invited to a friend's for Thanksgiving. But you never know when you might need this!

My uncle Kerm bakes his turkey upside down so that all the juices run to the breast meat to keep it moist.. it works.. My Son cooked his that way..it was his first time making one.. So it was done accidently..when he went to Carve it,he looked at me and said "MOM! Theres something wrong with my Turkey! It has no White Meat!..lol"
Does work though..also...lifting the skin and placing small pats of butter under it..makes it really moist.

Another way to cook a turkey, is to deep fry it. Again, as Daisy said, be sure that the turkey has been cleaned out & that it is completely thawed, prior to cooking. Also, only deep fry a turkey outdoors. It makes for a bird that is moist, as the juices are trapped inside, when the skin is fried. Yummmm.

If you use a cooking bag, try pouring a can of Mountain Dew into the cavity. Moist and sweet!

And if you deep fry a turkey, do a dry run with water first to find out exactly how much oil you need...it can be a painful experience if you put the turkey into too much hot oil...oh, and DON'T forget to thaw it first!
(By dry run, I mean put the turkey into the pot you're gonna deep fry it in, cover with water, then pour the water into measuring cups to determine the amount of oil you'll need)

preheat oven to 350 and 20 minutes a pound - after 1st hour bast at least every 45 mnutes... open the foil or uncover last 15 to 20 minutes if you like to brown and crisp the skin
ha ha yeah an onion or peeled apple or ...part of a pineapple too... good for moist and delicious meat...
Apple pies, tater or pumpkin and all the other good stuff... ha ha Yeah, I bake and do it all, except yams..sis-in-law has to bring'em -
Being single with all this space I have more room and I have been tinkering in the kitchen since I was a tot... back when all the boys in my family were raised plucking, skinning and butchering and preparing.. the gals did most of the canning and baking, but I was into everything - including the still in the other fruit cellar.. ha ha

My kids' great grandma (who was a chef, she went back to the tech college for it, at the age of 67 y/o,) she always smeared mayo all over the turkey before baking, it makes the turkey VERY VERY moist....I never doubted her as she was a saint...(MY BEST FRIEND) and it really does work, NO BASTING but watch the temp in the oven because the mayo can brown really fast towards the end of baking and make a crunchy top on turkey....no matters to me, as I like it that way
Good Luck, Sign
Can't wait to hear some of your 2nd graders replies

Ok I have some of the "recipes" from my 2nd graders. I'll add a few every couple of days. Here's the first one: First we kill a turkey. Then we take the feathers off. Then we cut off the head. And after that we cook it. The last part, we eat it.
And another: You have to have a turkey, spice and take out all the bones>
I think they'll do as good as I would!
