For those of us who participate in the MD forums while at work, how many of you have been caught red handed? Of course, policies vary depending upon where you work and if your computer access is in a "private" area.
I am right out in the open and admit to having been caught while viewing one of single_stl_dad's posts! Thank God my boss has a sense of humor!

That was the one thing I loved about working 3rd shift! No one around to "catch" me.

I freelance for the most part, so i really cant comment from personal experience.
HOWEVER, if one works for a company with over 50 employees, and/or has a "human resources" (or simular) you can rest assured they have a person whos sole job description is to monitor ALL computer(s) activities.
Not only monitoring which web sites their employees are surfing, but keeping records of all eMails sent and received..
Big brother is watching. And hes doing so with all seeing eyes..

Yep, and they have filters on our proxy servers too. If they had a problem with my doing this, they could stop me in a heartbeat. My boss knows me well enough to know that I can multitask quite well, not to mention that he really wouldn't want to start counting quid pro quo type stuff; he'd only lose in the long run.

Well like I stated in another thread... My schedule is flexible and I work out of my home. So I don't have a boss to catch me being online.

The "boss" here is so cool....In fact he allows those here in the office to utilize the net to most any degree as long as the work is completed and the bottom line is not effected. It works great .......Between clients the "boss" is on MD...How interesting. "Boss" thinks it's wonderful.

My boss is 30 miles away... I own the computer, the internet connection is mine... So long as I get my work done he has no complaints.

i used to work at a hospital where people used to do it until a few quit working and spent more time having fun on company time.
as a long standing perfectionist, hard working taxpayer, etc, i don't mind as long as someone is doing their job period. if they can't do it, get off the net -- especially if i'm footing the bill or adversely affected by said behavior.
as someone mentioned, anyone's puter can be monitored in the workplace. can't hide a thing.

My part-time normal job is in a judge's office, and I have a feeling he'd have some 'splainin to do if they ever did a computer audit on the system! I try to leave SingleStlDad's posts alone while I'm on that computer
He doesn't really mind, though; this is a small place, and it's rarely busy. As long as I get done what needs to be done, he's happy!

I dont mind as long as productivity doesnt suffer. I try my best to create an atmosphere where people want to work instead of watching the clock and want to bail. I think there are some fine lines when it comes to managing people. Each employee is different and you have to deal with them accordingly.

It's a non-issue in my book.
If I'm supposedly "at work", AND using THEIR computer, AND using their internet connection, AND being paid to work rather than pursue my personal hobbies & interests... I guess I wouldn't have the time to log-onto a dating site.
Just my opinion.

"as long as the work is getting done"
.. Good Lord, that sounds exactly like a junkie..
This behavior wouldn't be acceptable if one was continually talking on the phone, be it to a chat line or a beloved 2nd cousin.
Its still wasting time on personal adventures via the World Wide Web.. And doing so by taking advantage of the boss and his payroll expenses.

I see the technical end of companies and that's not really the case. A company would require one full-time person for every three regular employees to monitor all activity. It's not cost effective.
The far simpler solution that is most often used is to limit Internet access to approved websites such as customers, vendors, and subscribed services. Usually there's a request mechanism so that users can gain access to new sites required for work. That's what a "firewall" is all about.
Of course, being that I work from home my access is unbridled.
