I have a goldfish.......I have had it for about 3 or 4 years. Now it is just laying on its side at the bottom of the bowl. I dont want the poor little thing to die.....but it looks so sick....but is still breathing. Does anyone know what can make a goldfish better/recover? I would appreciate your input.....:((((

Also info said not to overcrowd their tank, and keep the water temp about 76 degrees. I'm sorry he's sick.

MaryLou, that's a long time for a goldfish to live. Maybe it's time you gave him the long flush to freedom. I'm sorry you're hurting. Hugs.

I too think 4 years is a very good life for a goldfish. Sorry your fish is ill.
I had a hamster once that was so sick, went to the vet, spent about $125 and poor thing still died - in my hands to boot while trying to get his antibiotics down him. Actually he was about 8 years old which is 1000 years to a hamster. Average life span I was told was about 3 or 4 years so I had his funeral, the kids and us mourned and we never replaced Freddie. He is still a fond memory for us tho. Sure missed him chasing the cats in his hamster ball. It's a kind hearted person that cherishes any animal - doesn't matter how silly it sounds the pain is still a heart pain. I hope you find something that helps your fish! Just know that you were the kindest you could be and karma is a powerful thing.

ML..... sorry about your fish. Unfortunately, fish, like birds and other like animals, don't show signs of being unwell until it's usually too late to help them. Like others have said, he has lived a very long time so you must have been doing all the right things while giving him care. I had a beautiful betta that lived for several years too, he would come to the top of his bowl and take the food out of my hand.

Not sure if this is a issue in this situation or not, but some municipal water sources are deadly to fish. In my area, the city water supply in Chlorimated [part Chlorine and part Ammonia]. If you use this kind of water, you have to use a solution from the pet store to make it compatible for fish. Best of luck.

What Ken said...You might need something for the water. I've had goldfish for quite a while now. But sometimes they get this disease called ick and it makes them die, or they die of natural causes. 4 years is a long time though...Sorry Marylou

Mine did the same thing...we'd had them for 7 yrs...they were huge...
Goldfish are carp...they live a long time and can survive in most water temps...
Toilet time! If they have what my fish got when my sister added fish from WalMart....ugh, It was called "ick" and they won't survive. I'm so sorry. I was soooooooo upset , but not as upset as my son Jason.
Sorry fender, didn't read your post until I'd posted alread with "ick". Again, sorry.

ML..
Your fish could be suffering from a problem with his swim bladder, poor water conditions or disease. Disease and poor water have been covered so try the Swim Bladder. Sometimes Goldfish can get constipated (probably because they eat everything) and the pressure will push against their Swim Bladders, keeping them deflated. Don't feed him for a few days. When you do feed him, feed him a cooked Pea with the skin removed. It will help with bowel movements. Give that a go and see what happens... If that doesn't work... You could always tie a piece of foam to his tail...
