i've never had a problem until i lived in memphis. i'd wake up with one eye completely swollen shut (i thought mike tyson had sneaked into my house).

i suppose i have seasonal allergies; at this time of year, i'm clawing at my eyes and my ears itch like crazy. i do take generic claritin, but that's not enough. if i take antihistamines, i'm drooling in the chair.

silly me went to the allergist. what a waste of time! i got stuck in the back with needles (i'm a wimp, ok?!), then dr giggles told me i had allergies. well wtf do u know! if i wanted to get beaten up/tortured, i could've called up beachnutru or gotten taboo drunk then smacked him around. same thing and less money.

i take so much crap for my diabetes that i dont want another prescription. any OTC suggestions, kind ppls? most appreciative.

I had my back stuck 51 times and was allergic to everythin!!!
I was told well u have allergies... OMG really?! =
I had to take shots for awhile then I started takin Claritan, then allegra and zertek? not sure about the spellin for the last one. They all worked ok for my allergies for awhile but eventually they stopped workin. BUT with all I was dog tired all the time.
I use flonase, I dont think u cant get that over the counter and i now use a generic over the counter antihistamine.. Equate - Chlortabs. They work really good for me. You can get em at Wal-Mart. I've tried prolly everythin OTC and thats all that has worked for me. I swear its this damn tennessee weather!

Maybe u can find somethin to help!!

Lecri, try vitamin C, and a good, strong dose of it (anywhere from 1000 to 3000 mg a day.) You may still have to take something OTC, but the vit. C acts as a natural antihistimine (sp?) and will clear up a portion of the symptoms by itself.

To get the right dosage, start with 500 mg, and up it by 500 each day until your urine turns bright neon yellow or orange, then back off by 500. It's not harmful, really...just colorful

lecriveuse,
I guess if your symptoms are always seasonal, it would appear to be season-related. However, it is important to try and narrow down the possibilities. Dust? Pollen? Mold? When you explained your condition when you wake up, the first thing that came to mind was the stuffing in your pillow! It's a possibility! It's not easy, but if you can start eliminating possibilities, it might be easier to treat or avoid.

I don't have any pronounced allergies, but dust, cats and a couple seasonal pollens can make my eyes itch or give me a sore throat. I did find reasons for other problems, like headaches or just feeling sick and weak sometimes....MSG - monosodium glutamate really screws me up. Some other marinades and seasonings in other stuff sometimes do too. You'd be surprised what products have MSG and how many people get headaches and more from it! My pointis that it's possible to be aware and experiment, trying to eliminate individual possibilities. Kinda like diagnosing a miss in a car- It's not the plugs, it's not the plug wires, etc!

I learned something new from danae about Vitamin C being a natural antihistimine. But I knew a long time ago that it REALLY helps prevent colds! Sure, I'd eat, drink or take tablets with vitamin C from time-to-time. But when I started drinking a glass of OJ every day with an added Vit. C chewable on a regular basis, I went from a cold or two per year to rarely ever getting one anymore! Gotta worry bout colds in FL too!

Good luck!

I've had the same experience with fewer colds, too, Checkmate. I don't really run out and try every "natural" remedy that comes along, but I swear by the vitamin C. Unfortunately I'm a smoker, and smoking really increases your need for C, but I discovered all these other benefits, too, once I started taking it.

Natural remedies:

Stinging nettle capsules work very well for allergies, sans side effects with the added benefit of some natural vitamins and minerals (unless you're allergic to them, of course!)

Bromelein is another good allergy symptom reliever.

If you know you have seasonal allergies, a good immune-system boosting regimine for the month prior can really help (vitamins, plus an herbal blend - I personally love Zand Insure Herbal with echinacea and goldenseal), as can making sure you stay hydrated and get enough rest and proper nutrition.

Doesn't hurt to take allergy shots either.

thanks everyone. i will up my vit C, but i've been a linus pauling fan for years. i used to use flonase, but i've stumbled across an OTC nasal spray called nasalcrom. by crackies, i think i've got it. i'm just tired of the itching, congestion and stuff sliding down my throat like it's a day at the fair.

biatchy, i'm the same way about taking something then it isn't as effective. i used chlortabs, but they knock me smooth out. guess what?i lived in memphis for four years, and i started having problems. stay out of tn, yall!

I take Zirtec and Nasonex. I also have air purifiers going especially in the bedroom.

Allegra D works for me too.

Lec

I use MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane), a natural sulfer for my allergies. I buy it at Vitamin World and take two 750 mg capsules at each meal. Over time this has significantly reduced my symptoms of allergies. MSM also has other great benefits to the drug....soft and supple skin, strong nails, shiny hair etc etc...read up on it and talk to your doctor re: drug interactions though.....you obviously wouldn't take it if you are allergic to any type of sulfer and if you're on alot of meds for diabetes you'd want to make sure everything was kosher.

Good luck friend!

Stinging Nettle is supposed to be good, I agree.

Look on www.drweil.com and research the symptoms.
