For the first time since I bought my house in 92, I saw a mouse this morning. When I grew up, we used traps, but I have kids and dogs around....so What to use that's safe?

Well if you can stand to see something suffer (or you really hate mice) the newest traps are called glue traps. Some seeds on a little tray filled with very sticky glue. The mouse runs over the trap and gets stuck, then you just dispose of it. (In my case I couldn't stand the idea of it suffering by starving to death in the trash.. I was humane.. eww.. never again)
Not poisonous, and can go anywhere out of traffic. Cats might get stuck to it though. ...

I have a place in north Queensland and mice are a given. Cockroaches too. There is nothing better than the old mouse trap. I use them on the stovetop as this is a popular place to find food morsels. I'm the first one up so I put them away.

Thanks! Two funny things about a mouse and my Dad... When I was about 17, I was sitting in my bed reading at about midnight, and I heard rustling in my desk drawer. I started screaming for my Dad...he, my Mom, and the dog showed up. With my Mom and the dang dog jumping up on my bed, my Dad opened up the drawer and WHACKED it with a shoe. When it ran under papers, he grabbed a can of Lysol (don't ask me and sprayed the dang thing. It ran right up his pant leg.... I never saw my Dad dance like that!
Another time, he took the mouse in the trap out to the back fence to let it go.... the mouse beat him back into the house!

Cats, of course...back in NYC a mouse had the temerity to try to move in...he made it about 5 feet before he was pounced on. Guess he won the Darwin award for mice...I had six cats then.

There are some good articles on google about catching mice. The regular old mouse trap is best, and bait it with peanut butter.

Heavens got the best idea and mice do make cheap cat food. On my old farm I had a bad rat problem and being as I was a poor farmer I couldnt afford to pay Orkin $600 to get rid of them. My brother gave me a good mouser cat and within a few months...no more rats.

Coca cola and plaster of paris.Don't mix it. Set it out in separate saucers where kids and pets can't get at it. This really works! If you really want to set out a mouse buffet throw them some ex-lax!

Keep it for a pet! I'm so soft I probably would, if I didn't have the cats - again, back in NY (never seen a mouse out here) they were doing road work in front of the house and apparently a field mouse got in and decided to take up residence in my dresser drawer...I opened the drawer and he was looking up at me so soulfully I probably would have adopted him if the cats hadn't had other plans, now that they could reach him...
(bonus on the cat side - I can feel my blood pressure drop and everything relaxes when one of them curls up on my chest, purring - cheap pest control and cheap medicine too!)

We did have white mice, hamsters, guinea pigs and a chinchilla growing up. I'm not scared of the little bugger-just hate being surprised! Hey! It's Christmastime...I could give it to my brother as a gift! (it ran 3 feet in front of my dog...she didn't budge (she's fairly blind, though)

I just called the plumber to ask if I could flush a live one....she LAUGHED and said not if you don't want a clog, or him crawling back into the house (I'm glad they record those conversations!)

Cats might get stuck to it though. ... Those things are very very sticky. Dogs might get it stuck to their feet. My grandma got stuck to it once. I think I did too.

Oh gosh. I am terrified of mice. I'm not sure WHY, I just am. We live out in the country. Surrounded by corn, soybean, etc. fields...& cow pasture. I've been hearing the critters, but thank goodness have not SEEN any. Mom uses the old fashioned snap traps & has caught a couple under the kitchen sink. Fitz, the cat, is curious & looks when he hears them....even opens cabinet doors, sniffs & stares, but a mouser he is NOT!
BTW, the exterminator is due here Thursday!

There is very little sport in trapping the little buggers. I like to set down bait...then get out my pellet pistol with a laser sight...get comfy in a chair with a cold six pack and let the hunt begin! Used to use a 12 gauge...but got tired of replacing drywall all the time!

Sounds like Little Dude needs to take a road trip! He loves catching mice. He "plays" them to death! I start feeling sorry for them. He bats them around, till they don't move, then carries them to another room and starts all over. When they are finally dead, he depoits them near me, as proud as can be. Look Mom, I did it!

Put me on the list suggesting a good, mouser cat. I've had cats around my farm for years and never had any problems with mice or rats even though I had barrels of horsefeed around. I have no earthly idea why, but it seems for me at least, that a calico cat is the best hunteress. Every "callie" I've ever had would hunt circles around all the others! I even had one bring home a 3 ft. long blacksnake that she found out at the barn. Unfortunately, the harmless blacksnake was also doing a good job of keeping rodents at bay but he was replaced by a "terrorist" cat.
