Ok this is not a pro or an ante smoking thread, there was an excellent one in ‘Dating & Romance’ that covered almost all aspects of the pros and cons etc!
I’m calling on ‘ex smokers’ to share there successes (or failures) with us, and any one else with constructive input!
Please please please No ‘it’s a filthy habit and it will kill you’ I/we have sort of worked that one out!
Help!

Can I post, even though I started again? I quit four years ago, for six months, but I started again
I just went cold turkey, but I did prepare for it mentally for a few days. Once I quit, I drank a lot of water, and walked every single time I got a craving...sometimes just around the block, sometimes for miles, lol. I actually lost weight, too, doing it that way.
Now I'm praying for the right motivation to quit again!

i know it'll kill me but do you ever think that smokers have the choice to still smoke if they want to... hey life is about living it with no regrets.. i could understand if i walked up to you and many others that don't smoke and started to blow the second hand smoke in your face ..
please note i'm not trying to bash you non smokers in anyway at all...

Hey danae74
Like I said (or failures)!
You say “I quit four years ago, for six months, but I started again”. What made you start again, is it that hard to qwit, or was it a momentary laps?

I became cohabitably involved with a boyfriend who smoked and evidently had no willpower of my own Unfortunately, the boyfriend didn't last, but the new old habit did.

Oh, and no, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be to quit. I didn't actually die (I really thought I might, on some level, lol.)

Hey Triple_H!
Sorry my fault, I should have made it clear, I am a smoker who is really giving serious consideration to stopping! Hence this thread!

Cold turkey. My story:
It was late - I was looking for a match to light my cigarette. I was up in the cupboards of my office trying to get a big box of matches (the foot long ones for lighting the fireplace) because I needed a smoke badly.
So I'm reaching up in the shelves and down tumble the matches and another box and other things - on my head. So I grabbing things out of the air as they're falling. So I stop and I'm looking at what I have in my hands - the box of fireplace matches in one hand - is decorated with angels that reminded me of my children. In the other hand I had a box of granite colored envelopes - looked amazingly like tombstones to me. Well, I took it as a sign and I never had that cigarette I wanted so badly. It's been about 8 years.

Devon, I quit 10 years ago through hypnosis, I never even had a desire to smoke again. It was done by a physician who specialized
in addictions, But it only works on people who are ready to quit,
you must substitute something else for the smoking habit,
My substitute was exercise, walking, yoga, ect.............
Good luck

Ditto here - 1/4/1989 at 12 noon. Ya think I considered it significant? No particular substitution for me, but I did chew Nicorette for about 6 months to be on the safe side. My hypnotist wasn't a physician, but he reminded me of my father, so the trust factor was strong. I was a 3 to 3 1/2 pack a day smoker, handed him my cigarettes on the way out the door, and never really wanted one again. One of the best suggestions he made though, was that other peoples' smoking would never bother me, and it hasn't.

Heaven & Minky, I think that's what I'll try when I get ready to quit for good. When I quit for the six months, my "mental preparation" was using a self-hynosis technique. It actually worked! But since I'm an inexperienced hypnotist, lol, I used aversion suggestions. "Smoking is a filthy habit. I hate the taste of cigarettes," and etc.. So when I started dating a person who smoked but I liked otherwise, I think I had to mentally overcome the aversion...hence, I started again.
A good hypnotist will offer positive suggestions, won't they? Your answer already suggests that they will, Heaven...

I quit smoking for about 4 months once but it didn't last. One thing at a time and when I'm ready. I managed to quit drinking simply by putting my mind to it but smoking is tougher in some ways.

Very much so - aversion doesn't really work that well. The suggestion that worked best for me surprised me because money's never been a driving force for me - he told me to picture what I'd spend on cigarettes in a year in the kitchen sink, then throwing in a match and watching it burn and go up in smoke. Maybe because it was so easy to visualize - the flames, the money curling up and blackening, and the smoke rising over what ended up being nothing but a pile of ashes. The more clearly you can visualize the suggestions, the more effective they are.

That reminds me of that country song "The Next 30 Years"
I quit once for 11 years and started again when my husband and I split up because "I could"
I plan to quit again when some certain stresses in my life pass and have had several people recommend hypnosis. Last time I quit I was newly pregnant, but, that won't help a guy much

I never really was addicted. I smoke off and on... i'll go a day or two where I'll have 2-3 during the day and then I'll go a week without one. I've never had the nic fit or anything, I just hardly think of it. The only thing is it's a habit when I'm driving, so sometimes it feels odd not to have one if I'm in the car for awhile.
If someone asked me to never smoke another one again, I'd throw away the pack and never think twice about it.
