Time out of Mind by John R. Maxim
I've bought this book twice now, once in paperback, then in hardcover. Perfect escapist reading...

Here's a capsule review about Time out of Mind:
Every time it snows, Jonathan Corbin sees people and scenes that haven't existed for 100 years. Is he being haunted or has he lost his mind? Sturdevant, the psychiatrist his girlfriend Gwen brings in, has another explanation: Jonathan is in the grip of "genetic memory," in which ancestral recollections, like physical characteristics, are genetically inherited. With Gwen and Sturdevant's encouragement, an engrossing saga unfolds, conceiving love, greed, and murder in 1880s New York, and featuring Teddy Roosevelt, Jay Gould and J. P. Morgan, among others, all from the perspective of Tilden Beckworth, by whom Jonathan seems possessed. Meanwhile, in the 1980s, Ella and Tilden Beckworth II are out to kill Jonathan as they have all others with knowledge of their family's dark secrets. But Lesko, the ex-cop they've hired for the job, is smarter, tougher and more ethical than they'd expected. Maxim (Abel/Baker/Charley) works up to an ingenious climax, with the vivid cast of characters, past and present, face to face at last. Combining the elements of a good old-fashioned ghost story and a suspenseful thriller, this is an immensely readable yarn. It really IS a great read, but the big bonus for me is that it's very well researched- there are all kinds of little details about the late 1800's, baseball, boxing and general history, that are fascinating all by themselves. He really makes you feel as if you're living in that time...a great book to get lost in.

I would have to think hard, but I'm kind of with Katt. If a book hasn't gotten my interest by chapter 2, I usually put it away and go on to something else...

The Alienist by Caleb Carr I LOVED that book Katy - read it about 40 years ago, then read everything else I could find by him (as well as John Dickson Carr, around the same time)

For some reason, in the last couple of weeks, I devoted more time than I should to some J.A. Jance and John Kellerman. (Crime novels.) I particularly like Jance's work. Wish she could write them as quickly as I read them.

My daughter gave me the Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant book for Christmas. Made while he was dieing of throat cancer its a brutally honest autobiography of his triumphs and failures as a person through his life, including his military career and as president.
